I was looking at a friends XPS and his media keys were quite different than mine. His keys seemed to be actual buttons underneath the plastic. He had to press down hard for the keys to function.
My M1530 on the other hand is truly touch sensitive. For mine to work I need to barely even touch it. As the tip of my finger just reaches the plastic, the key lights up and the command is recognized.
So does this mean that Dell replaced the poorly designed buttons with touch sensitive buttons or is his just defective?

Interesting, can you take a picture or anything?
-
i like the touch sensitive buttons, they work great
-
mine the same. Its sorta touch senstive, but you to apply some pressure for it to work.

@ Tusin
even if i did take a picture, it wouldn't mean anything. They both look exactly the same from the outside. I don't want to bother opening up the panel since I don't want to scratch the plastic on either mine or his.
I know for sure that both are different for another reason i just figured out!!!
The keys on mine (new one) work only with the touch of a finger, if I use a pencil or anything else it doesn't get do anything. Even if i apply slight force with a pencil eraser the media keys don't do anything. But the old model works when I use another object such as the pencil in this case. This means that mine is truly touch activated and his isn't! -
I know on my DV9000us (HP) the touch sensitive media buttons all go off if a tissue to a towel lands on my computer. I cant wipe the keyboard without launching Quickplay 20 times.

If you're interested, mine is the same as yours. New M1530 (ordered early may).
Touch buttons work at the *lightest* touch, must be a finger (not other object like you said). I think they feel absolutely brilliant, I wouldn't change a thing.
I did read in earlier reviews of the laptop that the controls required a firmer touch though, and was surprised to feel how nice mine were... so perhaps dell updated them at some stage. -
My M1530 requires a firm touch, but my M1330 works with the lightest touch.

Since when?
Personally, I really like the touch sensitive button's on my 1530. They work really well for me and my small hands -
I have seen many m1530's and never seen one with "buttons". That is the strangest thing I have heard. Maybe his m1530 is from one of the first ones made. Idk.

I also have noticed this. The media button bar that came with my original m1530 was also very touch sensitive. I just had to slightly touch it with my finger tip and it did what it was supposed to do...
But then I got my media bar replaced because of it being bowed and out of shape. The new one definitely looks better but the sensitivity is crap compared to the first one as I have to put much more pressure on it to work properly. I guess the production quality varies from part to part... unfortunately -
Yeah, mine are very touch sensitive as well and only respond to fingers. I love 'em!

Ok so I just checked with another person who also bought his laptop back in December and he also has the screwed up media keys. His works if he pushes it down with another object like a pen, stylus, or anything else. The new ones seem to only work with the touch of a finger.
This means that dell has changed up some parts for sure! -
the product comes shipped with a thin protective plastic film on the surface which has to be removed or the capacitative buttons won't work well.
