I know this is a repost from the main Dell thread, but I just realized this thread gets more traffic, so...

    Hi everyone,

My XPS M1530 has served me well over the past two years, but early this week, the screen would shut down after 10-15 minutes of use. When the screen shuts down, nothing is responsive (I can't put it to sleep, any sound that is playing "stutters", I can't switch it to an external monitor), leading me to believe that it isn't a loose cable problem. Right now, I have my laptop hooked up to an external monitor, and it works perfectly fine, but if I try using my laptop without the external screen, it still crashes on me. I don't know what the problem is, so does anyone here have any clue? I don't want to spend a lot of money for something that won't fix my laptop... Thanks!

prob your video card is bad. a known issue for 8600gt and a few others. dell did extend warranty for 1yr on card because of this issue and there is a lawsuit going on also.

If it displays externally then his GPU is fine.

Have you tried booting from a Linux boot disc and seeing if it does the same thing? This rules out bad drivers

Hmm I'll give the Linux option a try, but sometimes the screen shuts down as soon as I'm at the POST screen / right after...

Maybe you need to checked for a pinched cable? support.dell.com and punch in your service tag to get the service manual.

Do you have the LED or CCFL screen? You may need a new screen/inverter.

I think I have the CCFL screen. Problem is, for some reason, when I was trying to remove the DVD drive from my laptop, one of the screws holding down the monitor attachment was completely stripped, so I have no idea how I would remove the screen... I feel like that if the problem was screen related, I would be able to put my laptop to sleep instead of the laptop hanging?

Also, I just tried booting from a Linux (Ubuntu, latest build) Live USB. First time, as soon as I try running Ubuntu, the same thing happens. The second time, 3 minutes in, when I unplugged my headphones, the same thing happened. I'm so confused... If this is a hard-to-repair (and expensive) problem, I'll probably end up selling the laptop for parts and getting a new one.

Anyone? I'd like to know if there's a quick fix as soon as possible, if not I'm probably going to sell this laptop for parts... -_-
