Does any body know if M1530 is compatible with penryn without any hardware changes (except bios)? I have looked all over the web but I cant find an ambigious answer.
I found this in the XPS M1530 service manual: https://dcse.dell.com/ifr/Portables/XPS_M1530.zip
"Discrete graphics are an option for customers who want advanced performance as well as support for new technologies. Intels Santa Rosa technology brings parity with competitive products in the marketplace and facilitates the use of Crestline GM/PM chipsets and Merom processors. This platform is ready to accept Penryn processors."

I have tried to get an answer from Dell but with no luck so far. Do you know anything? My plan is to buy an m1530 with a 2,00Ghz T7250 and upgrade to a 2,5GHz T9300 later on.

It should be as penryn will use the same socket (p) as merom. However, the FSB on the 1530 is locked at 800MHz so the performane gain will be limited somewhat by not having it run at 1066MHz.
-
The Santa Rosa version of Penryn will only have FSB at 800MHz if i've got it all right.
-
According to this, their will be a 1066MHz FSB for penryn (this was taken from the 1730 spec sheet)

When is the penryn chip comming out -
The January release on Penryn should work in the M1530 although it will still be limited to the 800MHz FSB. Only advantage to this chip is SSE4 (faster video encoding) and because its 45nm should run cooler. The TDP is still 35W but I'm sure these chips should increase battery life a little bit but performance will probably be minimally increased.
For the 1066 FSB in laptops, have to wait until third quarter of 2008 when Intel releases the Montevina refresh with even newer Penryn processors (25 W TDP) so this should give a bit more performance and run cooler with longer battery life.
I don't see the January release on Penryn to be that big a deal...meaning if you want to buy now, just go for it not a lot to gain by waiting until January...although you would gain a bit by waiting until second half of 2008...but 6+ months is a long time. -
No confirmation about penryn and m1530 from Dell yet? -

It's not a new platform, it's still Santa Rosa. At first, Penryn will be a refresh to Santa Rosa. It's not until Q2/Q3 Penryn will fit on a completely new platform. I just want to make sure that there will be no hardware changes on the mobo to fit the first generation of Penryn. It looks like it won't be any changes but "looks like" isn't satisficing enough...
