Hi all, I am looking for some advice as what to do/try.

I did a restart of the laptop and after the initial bios load screen I get.

    "A disc read error occured"

Does not give me any options just a black screen with that message.
I have removed the hard drive and reseated it to no avail.

The warranty ran out two weeks ago :D

Is there any options available to me?
    Have I lost everything?

    Thanks.

Do you have a Linux Live CD or something you can put in to boot from a DVD? If it boots from that, I'd say you're hard disk is gone. You should be able to get everything from your backups.....you do have a backup, right?

Get that far first, see if it boots from a DVD and we can deal with the disk later.

    Thanks for the assistance.

I put a XP disc in a boot from DVD.

    Starts to do its setup.

Then I get a screen that asks me were I want to install.

Looking at this screen, The drive is being recognized....?

Select partition 2 and click enter. Then select "repair the OS".
