I am planning to order the XPS M 1530 within this week( Thanks to NBR who helped me reach this decision).I am purchasing this in the UK. As you guys are probably aware that it comes with 1 year XPS premium hardware support(including gaming and on-site support). The thing is the Dell, rep I spoke to is trying to convince me to purchase the 2 or 3 year extended XPS warranty(including the gaming and on-site support) as well. I told him I would give it a thought(as in ask you guys LOLZ). I know it is obviously my decision and I do have enough money for it.I have no idea what Dell service for XPS systems is like. Could you guys suggest whether it will be wise to purchase the extended warranty.I am looking to keep the machine for 2 years atleast. What I am trying to say is that there is no point in purchasing the extended warranty if their service is rubbish.Could somebody also comment on their experiences with Dell.Thanks.Hope NBR can help me with this decision as well.

If you plan to sell the laptop after 2 years for example its not worth it. BUT if he lets you buy a 1 year extended warranty (at a discounted rate) as opposed to the 3-4 years they try to flog you then go for it.

If you do plan to keep it for quite a while e.g. 4 years then it is worth considering. It is an onsite warranty I believe so it is fairly good. Personally I didn't go for it because I didn't want to fork out another £130 or so, plus I plan to keep mine for a maximum of 2.5 years. (Might go for a 1 year extension).

this is a new computer, has not been used by people more than 2 months , so you never know what could happen. you should get 2 year warantee if you are planing on keeping it for 2 years

Thanks deathpenalty. The rep is willing to take 16GBP off after the 25% discount as advertised on the Dell UK website(this is when I spoke to him today).Well I think I am going to keep the system for around 2.5 years as well. But could anyone please comment on the warranty service provided by Dell, as I already mentioned there is point buying the extended warranty if their service is rubbish(not suggesting that it is). Also does anyone know how is their on-site support, the dell Rep told me that a certified Dell technician is sent the next working day once a problem has been reported,is the service really that efficient?)Enlighten me NBR!!!

I'd go for the maximum possible extended warranty as when you come to sell it afterwards, people like to puchase systems that have waranty for piece of mind and i belive the warranty is transferable. like you, i also have been using my dell inspiron 8100 for many years and it's still solid!, but the XPS's are no way as solid as my old 8100, even though they are much nicer and slicker.

Dell UK XPS support is very good as they are based in Ireland and extreamly helpfull. I know since i have called them many times to replace my 4 x faulty xps m1330's and now getting a refund after 6 months of ordering the first system.

If the laptop has too many technical difficulties, they will simply replacement the machine.

Well after going through some of the posts I also thought the same thing(21 day return),but the Dell UK rep mentioned this in one of his emails:

    Hi,

Thanks for your Email,And as far as the return policy is concerned you
get 7 days to return from the day you receive it.

And you can cancel if you want till the time your computer is in
Production. And if once it's out of production you have seven days time
from the day you receive it and your money would be refunded within 10
    working days.

And if you receive a faulty product, you just need to give us a call and
it would be replaced with a new one.

So now I am kinda confused.Hope someone can clear this confusion or point to something I am probably missing.

IN THE UK it is 7 DAYS under the Distance Selling Regulation Act 2000. (They collect it from you for free).

I'm also intending to purchase an XPS 1530. I work in the IT sector, so won't be taking out the extended warranty myself (it if breaks I'll fix it), but I've dealt with Dell Support on several occasions.

The engineers they send to deal with on-site fixes are generally useless. They have limited skills and knowledge (they're board swappers, nothing more), the workmanship can be sloppy (missing screws, damaged casings etc).

However - Dell themselves are helpful. Their business support is some of the best I've ever dealt with. I'm not so familiar with the domestic support, but if you received an unsatisfactory repair from one of their site engineers, I expect they would make amens.

This is exactly what I wanted to know.I also guessed that their on-site service will not be anything great.I am getting a good discount on the 2 year XPS warranty(if i take it that is).The thing is I never keep a laptop for more than 2 years( don't get me wrong I am not bragging). So the discounted 2 year warranty looks pretty good. The dell rep was trying so hard to convice me to buy an extended warranty.I wonder whether the sales rep benefit in any ways if they can sell extended warranties.

I expect they receive a greater commision for selling warranty upgrades as the profit margin is effectively 100% unless you make a claim.

That said, if they've offered you the 2 year warranty for £80, then I'd say it's a reasonable deal and at the sweetspot of unit replacement to repair cost.

At the end of year 2, your 1530 is likely to have a resale value of around £300 (depending on your chosen spec) so is still worth an £80 fix.

There is also the potential benefit of an upgrade in the case of the unit being BER, and if you're bored of it within a year you can sell it with a full years warranty - a big plus to potential buyers.

I am getting the 2 year warranty for 60 GBP,so guess its a pretty good deal.Well yes I do get bored of a particular system pretty quick(not good). This M1530 is going to replace my 1st Gen MacBook Pro which I bought around 2 years ago. The reason I am moving to windows from macintosh is because i want to play more games(not all titles are available for mac).
