    My M1710 Just died.
I was using it for about 5-10mins then it shut it down when i was in the middle of windows, i turned it back on to see if it was ok. it wont boot , Just turns on the power led for 5 seconds and the HD clicks then shuts off, Hold the FN key and the power button and the 3 lock symbol leds next to the media button turn on with the power led for 5 seconds then shuts off.
Do you know what this means?

I was told by dell that its the motherboard but when i took the computer apart there was black stuff were the video card plugs in. the video card seems to be okay but has some black stuff next to the connector that hooks it to the motherboard. dell is saying since it wont post its the motherboard. i have a full warranty but dell refuses to send me the parts to repair it because i need to speak with order verifaction but the lady never returns my phone calls. so i bought a motherboard on ebay for the 1710 but im afraid its the video card as well. can anyone tell me what the green lights mean when the hold down the fn and power button?

When I first got my m1530 I had the exact same problem. Just a black screen and hard drive clicking. Though I didn't have "black stuff" on my video card...

Have you tried reseating the RAM? It may not do anything at all, but it fixed my problem completely. By reseat I mean take the RAM sticks out, switch their places, and put them back in.
