If there is another thread in this forum someone can point me to with a solution to this problem other than returning parts to dell I would really appreciate it, I've looked all over for days and come up empty.

I've owned my M1730 for well over a year as far as I can remember, and up until about a week ago it has worked great, but now I'm getting random crashes to a black screen where my computer becomes completely non-responsive, only option is to force it to shutdown then reboot.

I have taken it apart and cleaned all the dust from between the GPU fans and the air vents, and although my laptop is running a lot cooler now than it was several months ago when I had no problems I am still getting the crashes randomly as if it was overheating (that's the only answer I've come across). They are less frequent and now have only happened while I am running games (so far). The only thing I can think of is backing up everything and using the tool on the recovery partition to reformat. Would this do any good? or am I just going to end up with no data and more black screens?

Any help would be appreciated, I've been reading threads from 2007 about this problem so im posting a new one in the hope that someone might have found a proper fix other than sending the laptop back to dell for a replacement... (which I can't do as I've already taken it apart to clean out the fans) Thanks in advance for any replys :(

I think you can still send it to Dell for repair. There are no warranty seals inside you can break when cleaning your laptop. I take apart my rig often for cleaning. I don't see an issue here.

It looks like you've got the first symptoms of a dying GPU card. If you've still warranty left call Dell tech support for replacing it. If you own a 8800M GTX card you'll probably be lucky, cause Dell is replacing them a lot for 9800M GTX cards right now these days.

Also if you have In-home warranty, a tech will come to your home and will fix it at your place.

Here you'll also find a lot of information and support from other XPS M1730 owners:
