So how are they going to replace my 9800GTX's ? I don't want anything less, as they might use 8800GTX's

here in the UK the customer relations rep who is dealing with my case said my system would be repaired before tomorrow (weds) if not he would replace my system so if i don't get a tech call today (doubtful) im on the phone first thing in the morning .
Anyone in the UK been successful in getting a m17x replacement ?

i suppose the best bet is to specify what i need in a replacement i.e sli card no less than an 8800m gtx
17 inch 1920 x1200 display backlit keyboard, dual core processor etc ?

I don't want anything less than i have already got.

HAAHAHAHAHA. Good luck. As far as my intelligence goes, the 9800 GTX was only in proprietary production for a couple months, and scrapped because it was too impractical for cooling.

You get a lot of what's known in U.K. as 'highly-skilled immigrants' from India, doing such technical work at middle-corporate level. Most of them are settled individuals who may've spent their early-lives in India, prospered with good higher-education and moved to the states for bigger career aspirations, and they end up settled. Naturally, their fundamental accent doesn't change, but you can tell one of these types by how polished they sound, which is a stark contrast to your average outsourced agent who will stumble and fumble all over the place with their grammar, choice of words, and what will most likely appear to be a rather weak command of the English language.

However, you raise an important point about the 'carpet bombing'. So this is why I am not getting any replies from them, unlike last time. Crap. My rep, is. . . well, not getting much done. What's worse is that she's out of office until the 12th of October. I should just sue these -----! If I get my money, I won't even think twice about getting another Dell product. If not, and it comes down to a system replacement, and other U.K. residents ask for advice on high-end gaming laptops, I will still advise them against Dell, despite owning such a system.

Edit: Crap. Couldn't you just use an alternative e-mail address to carpet bomb the executives, again?

    To Dazr,
Dude, there have been quite a few U.K. and E.U. members that have secured M17x replacements, so I suggest you bring up this point during your 'negotiations' with Dell.

I`m in a similar position to a lot of you above where i`m waiting for a manager to make a decision on a replacement for my M1730, my situation is slightly different as i bought my laptop from a Dell re-seller so a refund isn`t an option as dell only refund what a re-seller paid to them and not what the customer paid to the re-seller.

The difference in what i paid to the re-seller and what the re-seller paid to Dell is around £500 which is approx $800, i`ll post what they offer me, i won`t accept a lesser spec of any kind which ive told them. Their seems to be a fair increase on this thread alone of people asking for M1730`s to be replaced.

Exactly one week after the order was created, my Alienware M17x is on the truck for delivery this morning!!!

If you had SLI you must INSIST you have SLI in your replacement, not to mention Raid capabilities, 17 inch 1200p screen. They will give you exactly what they gave me in my signature or maybe even better. Just stick to your guns and escalate if necessary.

    Seems the posts on the thread recently have all been about M1730 failing and being replaced with M17x's. So I thought we should get a quick tally, to get the ball rolling (bad punage yes!) copy and paste and post the below list with people who are getting / or have gotten a replacement;

    M1730 -> M17x List:

    I'm making progress:

Agent: "Since you don't approve of a studio xps 16"

Agent: "It will most likely be a alienware m17x since we currently don't have xps 1730 that are shipping. But I'll be sending a request now for an alienware"

Agent: "No problem. Also there might be someone who'll contact you once we're sure that an alienware has been ordered."

They stated they would update me via email when the exchange group sends them something back, it should be shortly. They said to call again if I do not hear something by 12.... which I did.... still no word...

I told them I was calling tonight.... I'm going to ride them all the way out until this is done right.

I just spent 35 min with Dell CS and they have escalated my case now and would get back to be tomorrow with the type of machine I will be getting. I had the CS agent specifically request for a M17x and he said that it was listed as part of the request. He also said that the SXPS 1640 is not an equal or better replacement for the M1730, in fact he said that it is a big downgrade. Hopefully my order number gets generated soon.

may i ask how long it takes everyone from 1st contact to getting to the replacement stage? I have been waiting over a month now for any sort of action to happen which by reading posts in this thread is peanuts . closest i got atm is customer relations rep promised me that if mine wasn`t fixed by today he would let me have a replacement . I phone tonight only to be told i would be contacted tomorrow but it would be unlikely i would get a replacement . Guess they are stringing everyone out until they get refurb 8800m`s back in stock.

I called last tuesday because the part they sent me failed immediately. I was told that the last time when that part fails they will replace the system.

When they tell you its going to take 7-21 business days they are not lying... it needs to be approved, which in my case took 5 business days (I hope) and now it needs to be built which could be a week to 3 weeks depending if the parts are available... best thing to look at is when you find out what model ur getting, check the dell site and make one, see when the initial ship date would be.... then you have your answer.

3 hours on phone w/tech support + 1 dell chat and I'm still waiting to get the better processor sent out. 3 hours consumed by contacting Alienware, then Alienware, then Dell, then Dell, then Dell, then back to Alienware. Apparently:

    - Dell is unable to order Alienware parts.
    - Alienware managers can't order superior parts (only replacement)

So I'm on hold while they figure out how to do this.

Not familiar with the 1710 but we were offered xps 1640's and had to fight for a comparable system but that is mostly due to them being out of our components or having numerous hardware replacements, If they havent fixed the same major system part atleast a total of three times they will simply fix it so that it works as it should. What are the specs on it? Simply go to their website and request an ownership transfer, you will have to prove it by providing the original or previous owners warranty info.

I had the 1710 back in the day. The 1730 was the upgrade to the 1710.

You should be able to get an m17x or a XPS S16 as a replacement as long as the C Care is still good.

i dont think cc would have anything to do with it because it is a hardware warranty issue. cc is only for you dropping or damaging the computer

you will get a 1730 (doubtful) or a m17x. i have seen people getting the M6400m too but it is unusual, but a good replacement if you can do without the fancy lights and it has a great gpu, but it isnt a gameing rig so you can refuse that too, they will offer a xps16 as a replacement but because it has a 16 inch screen it is a downgrade and there is no argument whatsoever, just refuse and you will get the m17x

might take a long time though so be warned

As long as you transfer the ownership all warranties that are active on the laptop or pc transfer along with the product. So basically it is covered as if you bought it from them so dont approach the situation like they are doing you a favor, as long as you provide all the info from the previous owner you will be alright.

That is very true, but I have to emphasise a couple of points, Deeznizzles.

    First point:
The wrath of my ancestors + you! Bahahaha!

    Second point:
In all seriousness. Warranty transfer has become a joke in my books. You can give them all the details, but when it comes to a refund, they will expect -you- to run around and get a hold of the original company and get them to write quite an annoying 'consent letter'. You can give them all the details in the world, and be the legal owner, but they'll give you grief, regardless of this truth.

So yes, I would support the idea that people shouldn't play the game like as though Dell's doing them a favour, because if you go about it that way, they will make you feel like a 'second owner'. Don't play first owner/second owner - you are the owner, period! Therefore, they owe you!

well today is my D Day my lappy was supposed to be fixed today (yea right) and is now in the 5th week of waiting the customer relations rep someone called ritesh (anyone had dealings with him?) promised me i would get a replacement if it was not fixed by today . My only problem seems is that i have had minor trouble with my m1730 in the past 11 months (2 call-outs) and this is the first time my 8800m`s has failed . would they hold that against me ? They are phoning me this afternoon and i get the distinct impression they are going to try and wriggle out of giving me a replacement . Any tips on how to approach this ? :)

Well, I tried calling a couple guys in the Escalation department and asking for them by name to the router (main office), and after looking at my service tag he realized I already had a guy dealing with my case (suffice to say I don't like him, which is why I'm hunting around for another guy). But anyways, long story short, I can't ASK for another guy to deal with since someone else is already on my case, even though last time I spoke with him I hung up on him since I was mad as hell.

    The Dell hell continues...

    Dazr,

Be firm with the person you talk to and tell them that because of all trouble your having you now wish to have a replacement laptop. Tell this person that you want and will only accept an Alienware M17x as a proper replacement for your current gaming laptop. Don't back off from this demand. The next step once Dell determines that your really serious is that they will get authorization and then confirm with you the specs of your replacement laptop. At some point in this process Dell will provide you both an order number and your customer number. Be sure to ask for both in order to track your order process. I hope this helps.....be firm and don't take no for an answer!

    Dazr,

Call them back and tell them you will not accept a M1730 replacement because they no longer make them new...you'll only get a patch up POS. Tell them that now you'll only accept AW M17x with similar specs as your current laptop or better. This way they won't keep you on the Dell Hell Roller Coaster ride that a few are going through on here. Get out of the M1730 repair mode and now force Dell into the replace your laptop with an AW M17x mode....take control now before this opportunity slips by! I really encourage you to do this as soon as possible.

Exactly my point. Whatever M1730's are still out there are either patched up POS or someone else's recycled problem that Dell will try and pawn off onto you. Dell hopes that you'll accept whatever they initially offer and hope you go away until your current warranty expires. Then they're off the hook for the troublesome system they sold to all of us. It appears that many of the XPS 1730's have an average shelf life of 8-12 months or so and suddenly video problems begin from what others have said on this site and other sites I've viewed. Good luck to you!!!

. . .I really hope I get my money back. Heh. Had a word with a new Dell rep, since the old one's out, and they told me that they could get me a brand new M1730, but with 8700m GT SLi, and then they'll ship out the 9800m GT. The man also said that by policy this is all they can do and that I don't have to take this option, so he'll help further with the refund.

Yeah, like I said, I really do hope I get my money back. BEST RESULT!

Customer Relations called me back and i was given an order number but she couldnt/wouldnt? tell me what i was getting . She did say that it would be a brand new computer not a referb etc which i think is a good sign ? when i questioned her about the gfx card she said i would get equal or an upgrade nothing lower. So unless they have new 8800m sli or 9800m sli in stock it looks good atm .
    Fingers crossed

just something to tell you guys.. theres actually lots of spare xps 1730s floating around actually. i think they are all refurbs..

at Games Convention Asia(GCA) held in sg a few weeks ago, dell help sponsor the garena blackshot competition and guess what i saw? TONS of xps 1730s used as gaming rigs for the competitors courtesy of dell. So i guess they took the competitors as testers for the refurb systems and they should be on the way shipping to people all over the world as replacements by now :)

so just dont accept ANY xps 1730s as replacement and just ask for an m17x.

i been on the phone for an hour with a rep trying to get a m17x request .customer relations won`t play ball they are saying my system will be new and i`m getting a new replacement with the same specs? they are saying that the 8800ms that will be in my new m1730 will also be new direct from the manufacturer with no more heat issues
are they still making 8800ms ?.
I think i`m buggered or is there anything else i can do?
Is it worth going through the normal sales channels once i get my customer number?

I have hit a stone wall. My only hope are the previous owners/company. I am still trying to get something from them, once I get this something, I will make a run from Dell. I don't like 'em.

For future reference, if anyone speaks with a Manjunath Hosatti, Senior Manager for Customer Relations Dell UK & Ireland, do not be offended; he doesn't really mean to be a condescending jerk. To his own credit and advantage, the guy is very thorough, but he will easily contradict himself in his second sentence.

He told me that he cannot comment on others getting M17x as replacement, and that things outside his 'department' are not in his control. Right. So I ask him about his 'department', which he was very difficult with explaining. He said that his department is 'Customer Relations'. And I added, "for which region?" To which I got, "UK and Ireland." He then went on to add that they handle everything for that region from technical to customer relations issues - it's all the same. So I then stated that by his own admittance, UK and Ireland customers are getting better parts and exchanges in UK and Ireland. His reply, "I cannot comment for technical department, as it is another site." You see what he did right there? Seriously, this guy was a bona fide jerk! If Dell are hiring such people, then I am not interested in their business.

I will take my money. Hell, I am willing to offer commission to the previous owner for helping me out, so long as I don't have to ever speak with a Dell rep., ever again.
