Hi Guys, Just took delivery of a brand new XPS M1730, and so far im very disappointed.

    I went for the Core 2 2.2ghz T7500, 2GB Ram, 200GB, Dual 8700M GT

I installed COD4, Halo 2 and Half Life 2, and they all run like crap! Even taking the resolution down to 1024 and turning everything off, they still stutter.

I removed everything from startup and tried again, but no luck, just as bad.
I havent been on the net with it yet so its not a virus issue or anything like that.

Its running the latest gfx drivers.

I dont know what to try now

Anyone read or had similar problems?

    Thanks in advance

Are you using the latest drivers from Dell or www.laptopvideo2go.com. If you are using Dell drivers try the drivers from the site I mentioned. Also did you do a clean install and did you get rid of the bloatware from Dell?I know you mentioned that you removed everything from startup but its nothing like doing a clean install.

make sure system is plugged into the power outlet and set to high performance power plan in vista....i've seen many people missing that detail.
even balanced power mode doesn't cut it - it HAS to be in high performance

COD4 should run very well @ 1900x1200 even at max settings.

    Make sure to enable SLI.

    Try different drivers.

Beta driver from nvidia is stable and easy to install if you don't know much about installing other drivers.

the latest drivers from the site the other users have mention should help. However, you would think by the notebook's house size it should run anything without drivers ect lol!

The only games I play on mine (which is EXACTLY the same as yours) is CounterStrike:Source and COD4, both I play competitively.

CounterStrike (full native res, all on) video test I get avg 188fps (which I limit to 61fps during competitively game play)

COD4 @ 1280 x 800 everything on, I can play for single player, but competitively, I turn off depth of field (its annoying and I get a 5 fps+ increase). Ensure in the video options that dual video cards are set, it doesn't detect them. COD4 doesn't have seem to be written for duel cards as much, switching on SLi in COD4 gives you a +5 fps increase, not as much as other games like CS.

I'ld check the power options, set to performance mode.

    Hope this helps.

I'd recommend benching your computer with 3dmark06 so people can get a feel if you're just expecting more out of the machine or if you truly have a hardware problem with your machine.

Typical out of the box scores are 8000-9000.

After that it may be a matter of you tweaking your sli settings or in game settings.

I scored 8700, have sli set right and COD4 runs at over 30fps at native res with every on or set to medium. When there's a lot of model around I dip below 20, like a quick rotation with my mouse, but it's still fluid game play.

Call of Duty 4 runs great in 1920x1200 on this machine. I use the 169.09 drivers from Laptopvideo2Go and have my 8700m GT in SLI overclocked to 734/1350/900.

What I was amazed to see is that STALKER runs in 1920x1200 with dynamic lighting and the sliders not all maxed out with FPS ranges from 40-60 fps.

So you shouldn´t have any trouble running Half Life 2. Try these drivers, they are really good my setup. Now I´m running the resource hog Vista, but plan to dual boot with XP soon. You will definitely earn a few more fps'es with XP compared to Vista.

I'm running XP Pro on my 8700 GT M1730, and I'm attempting to run games that are ~6 years old, and I still get stuttering when I move the mouse: they are two of my old favourites: System Shock 2 and Anachronox.

I think I've tried every combination of video driver and LV2G drivers seem to cause aspect ratio problems on my external 2405 monitor.

I am not a big gamer (I appreciate the performance in day-to-day tasks, software compiling, etc) but would like to get my shiny new Santa Rosa computer to run as fast as my 2.6 GHz P4 with an ATI 850 pro!

    Hi,
I have a Del XPS M1730 with dual bb00M GTX 512 MB cards and the 2.8Ghx core 2 extreme processor 4gb of ram and raid 0 disks - and I was getting between 2000 and 3000 on 3d Mark 06 - totally rubbish. I had the engineer over who replaced the motherboard but it made no difference - but when he did I saw a message in the bios which came up saying that my power supply was faulty and the system performance would be reduced to compensate. So the engineer came out again two days later and replaced the power supply - now I get over 13000 on 3d Mark 06 - problem solved!
Other things to try - make sure SLI is enabled in the nvidia control panel, use alternate frame rendering 1 in the 3d graphics settings.
Otherwise call out the engineer to replace bits of/the whole laptop - which they will eventually have to do if you are still in warranty.
I'm using the 179.14 drivers which are super stable and fast and I'm running Vista so on XP you should get even better performance!
