I'm seriously considering getting the Dell XPS 16 Studio laptop for my fiance. She is starting to really enjoy photo editing and having the 1920x1080 screen would be fantastic compared to her current 15.4" 1280x800 laptop. However I do have some questions.

I was originally looking at 18.4" laptops from other manufacturers with the 1920x1080 resolution and 17" laptops with the 1920x1200 resolution. My concern is because the screen is 16" from Dell, is 1920x1080 too much resolution for desktop use? Or should I get a 17" or 18.4" laptop instead?

She doesn't travel much with the laptop... in fact hardly at all really. So portability is not super important. I'm just worried things might appear to be too tiny on the screen with a 16" screen compared to the larger ones.

Anyway, any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

If its strictly a desktop replacement, then go for the 17 or 18.4 inch.. since you are paying for portability that youre not going to use. Keep in mind also that the sxps16 is more advanced than the s17 (eSATA, displayport, DDR3, etc)

Also, the 16 inch @ 1080p is basically the same pixel density as 17 inch @ 1920x1200 (imagine taking the 17 inch and removing 120 lines of pixels). The difference is really 16 vs. 18.4 @ 1080p.

I am not condoning cheating Uncle Sam, but how would they have found out that you bought that laptop in Canada instead of bringing with you from the US?

    mmmmm..your post made no sense.

as to OP.. the 18.4 hp has a native of 1920x1080, screen looks very good with this resolution and even has a bluray drive if that matters..

Find a Best Buy, Futureshop, or Sonystyle store near you and take your girlfriend there. The high end Sony Vaio FW that they sell at the store is a 16 inch screen at 1920x1080p resolution, the same size as the Dell XPS 1640. If she likes that size and resolution she will like the Dell as they are the same size.
