    Hi
I have a Dell XPS 1330 that happily runs Windows XP.
It has the Mata DVD+-Rw UJ-857G writer.
It can read DVDs alright, but I never ever managed to write any CD or DVD with it.
I very rarely use it (or try to use it) for writing a CD, so I always gave up, rather than trying to explore why it failes. But I think it's just broken, I tried various software. It does it very nicely, starting and then failing afer ruinig the disk.
    Anybody any issues like that?
    M.

We need more details. Saying it fails is not very illuminating.

There's currently two threads going around with regards to the slot loading (TEAC and Matashi ta ) drives having issues with burning. The burner can read retail DVD's and CD's, but not CD-R's / DVD-R's, etc and fails to burn . Their solution was to use a disc cleaner. Obviously the optical lens became dirty in some way. Like you, I hardly used my Matashi ta drive, but I've got the same issue. I'm currently waiting on a disc cleaner to see if that solves my problem. If Dell diagnostics tell you that the drive is functioning fine and like you said, you can still play retail DVD's, I'd give a CD/DVD cleaner a try. It could be something as simple as a dirty lens.

........or after purchasing one of those CD cleaners, which I did, it doesn't do anything for it and leads me to the conclusion that it's a P.O.S and will require taking the keyboard off, the screen off, the internals out, in order to reach the drive and replace it which happens to be located in one of the hardest to reach locations in the M1330. Typical!!
