^ On the other thread, they're saying it is now discontinued end of life product.

The Dell reps are quite clueless,
I think by End of life they mean of of this laptop with these specs. I believe they think of the new XPS 17 w/SB as new laptop.

    I tweeted LionelatDell this:
"What's going on with the XPS line? 14 and 17 are both gone, no word on when the refreshed 17 will be out, let alone the 15."

    To which he responded:
"Hang in there. New info coming soon on some."

    I'm trying...

I work for a rival computer manufacturer. Because of the NDA involved I don't really want to say where.

Nah.. They will disassemble the defective notebooks and put the parts back into the production line. It doesn't take that long to "fix". And it won't take them that long to get them back into the "channel" Especially with Dell having facilities here in the U.S. as well as overseas.

I'm new here...found y'all by while searching for the status of the Dell XPS 15. I'm not terribly tech savvy, just savvy enough to keep a 10 year old HP laptop that was a POS new, running even after I ran over it with my car 3 years ago. My other computer is an 8 year old Dell Dimension 8300.
I started looking for a new computer about 2 weeks ago after I got some grant money. I was very vaguely aware of the Intel processor problems.

On Tuesday (15FEB) I ordered a Dell XPS 15 with these specs:
    Dell XPS 15, Core I7 740QM 1.73ghz, 8 GB RAM, DDR3 2DIMM , 640 Gigabyte 7200RPM SATA HD, 720p

I did this with Dell EPP phone sales in Nashville after playing around with configurations on the Dell website. For 3 days the order status showed “in production”.

On Friday (18FEB) at 4pm I got an email from Dell:
We had to cancel your order due to a Dell operations request. The Intel Core i7 and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 2GB graphics you selected is no longer available for the XPS 15.

I called the number given and was transferred 5 times and finally ended up talking to someone in Austin who used the Sandy processor issue as the reason for cancelling the order. He then tried to talk me into an i5 processor since I’m not a gamer.

I said thanks but no thanks. I can wait. I asked how long and he said maybe 3 weeks but really no way to know. That’s when I started looking for a more concrete answer and found y’all. Still no concrete answers but this thread has been enlightening to say the least.

Sorry to go on so long – but I thought y’all might find my experience interesting. I’m not sure how long I’ll wait on Dell but after looking at other options I’m willing to wait awhile.

Just my opinion but atleast one other manufacturer beat Dell to the punch with a Sandy Bridge laptop (Asus by about a month) on the first release. That may mean that they'll do it again in which case, I'd be looking for an announcement or ads from Asus' fixed model before I look for Dell's fixed model.

Hate to be a nay-sayer because I'm dying for an upgrade too but don't want to be overly optimistic either. After all, Dell isn't all the fast when it comes to shipping either.

I'm in the same boat as you, mbj0213, though I've had the money available for months and it needs to be used by June, so I'm really hoping Dell gets it together sooner rather than later. Worse comes to worse, I suppose I could buy something intermediate and use the buyback program to get credit for Sandy Bridge.

Off Topic to k2007: I was noticing your signature and how your m1530 runs so hot. Every time that mine has started to do that, I found that opening it up and shooting compressed air into the fan-heatsink assembly to get dust out helped a lot. It didn't seem like much dust was there, but it was blocking enough airflow to matter.

Thanks. I do that from time to time as well. Last did it about 2 months ago. I also had to remove the internal wireless card and start using a USB wireless adpater. The internal wireless was getting unbelievably hot - hotter than any other part of the computer. Now without it, it's still uncomfortably hot. And the touchpad button is worn down - something that has been replaced 4 times already.

I honestly don't know how I still use it. Looking forward to a new Dell hopefully and definitely a new warranty !

    Hmm.

I'm *very* happy I purchased my 701x when I did [and with such a great bargain]. I'm also missing that poster who returned his fully specc'd 701x as a "proto-type" expecting a 702x the next week.

    :D

    @current topic.

Dell are going to be hurting badly from this - 501 no i7, 401 gone [discontinued - ok, Dell, you're dumb - perfect chance to actually use those million+ SB chips you ordered there, but "whatever"] and now the 701x gone the way of the polar bear.

Talk about lack of flexibility in large corporations

Dell will be fine. 4th Quarter earnings showed their net income double and once the Sandy Bridge computers are released again their sales will go crazy.

Yes but what about me ('cause it is all about me)! Ya know - I want my cake and I want it now (now that I've decided I want cake). This whole waiting thing will drive me bonkers.

I have the worst luck with this kind of stuff. Dell holds out this delectible carrot - lets me anticipate for 3 whole days (ya know the whole can't wait, can't wait, when's it gonna get here thing) - then yanks it back and says NO! You must start all over! But before you can start over we're going to pass you around to various call centers in India (who bless their hearts-didn't know what to tell me) just to be sure you're good and pissed off before we tell you you're screwed. But hey! Thanks for shopping Dell!
(is there an emoticon for tongue-in-cheek?)

I'm prepared to wait for this. Worst case scenario is May, right? I'm ready.

    EDIT: I am waiting for:

    Dell XPS 15 L502X | Intel Core i5-2520M | 6GB 1333MHz RAM | GeForce Nvidia GT 525M | 15.6" FHD 1920x1080 B+RGLED display | 500GB 7200RPM storage | Windows 7 Home Premium | Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 | Backlit chiclet keyboard | 9 cell battery | (Blu-ray or DVD?)

How much do you think this configuration would cost me?

XPS17 R2 is available throughout Europe from today, prices seem to be the same as for the "old" XPS17.

The reps in Germany say the XPS15 R2 will be available very soon, but they have no more info about it. Most of the time this means a couple of days!

It could be because they don't want to overlap with the Presidents' Day Sale, which would end today. Or it's a roll-out based on local time.

    Hi everyone,
I'm italian and since today is it possible to buy the new XPS 17. About new features I'll copy past some good surprises from the italian Dell website specs:
Bluetooth is not anymore optional but integrated in the wireless card.

This referes to the multimedia control buttons and the part in bold means exactly: backlit keyboard activation.

    enjoy :)

lol, i've noticed it now... i've bought the 555 with hd display (don't need fhd on a 17" tbh).
Is for sure a problem of the configurator because it also says "error, the fhd displayis not compatible with alluminium color", lol.

If it's the same as the xps 15, the FHD display will have a much better quality and viewing angles than the HD screen... at least I hope so couse the L701 weakest point was the screen quality from what I could read on this forum.

Anyway I contacted Dell support to notify them of this error... hope they fix it soon.

My system has had enough services to get them to do it, i was just waiting for SB to release, and since they don't have any old i7's left, they will have no choice but to give me the new ones :D

Now to just wait until a) The XPS 17 is actually released in the U.S. (Damn Presidents' birthdays mucking everything up) and b) The XPS 15 is released.

For the record, the XPS 15 design page still talks about having a second generation Intel i5. Which is actually curious--no i7 for the revamped 15?

EDIT: The XPS 15 description page for the EPP (college students, etc.) does talk about the second-gen i7.

I manages to cancel the order for the 501 yesterday - I honestly didn't think it was this close. The Dell rep I spoke to last night suggested that Intel are till calling the shots and that the 502 will use a different chipset to the 702. Is this correct?

Actually yes. The quad-core i7 processors were released concurrent with CES, but the dual-core i3/i5/i7 were apparently just released on the 20th. I'm guessing the XPS 15 will use those processors. Of course, I'm hoping that means release in the next week rather than in another month.
