Dell - Help Me Choose: NVIDIA Graphics
In the Compare side by side section, Dell indicates that the video memory is discrete. I understand this to mean that it is dedicated memory on the video card. It is not memory from the system memory.

The above page is only linked to from the L702x config pages.

Oh, huh... Then maybe it can use system memory in addition to that? The RAM selection does say it is Shared, but it doesn't say shared with what - maybe with the integrated graphics?

What is the expected battery life on the new XPS 15's? I figured it would be around 4-5 hours idle but I don't know enough about the power saving claims of the sandy bridge.

Anandtech wrote a nice review on Sandy Bridge: Intel’s Sandy Bridge i7-2820QM: Upheaval in the Mobile Landscape.

I suggest you check it out (and will be happilly surprised to see the efficiency).

The intel integrated chipset uses system ram, the Nvidia GT540M uses it's own 2GB of discrete ram.

Do the new XPS Sandy Bridge laptops come with Windows 7 SP1 or just Windows 7 with no service pack? It's good to know how up-to-date the build is (e.g. drivers, etc).

True, but it's better if all the drivers are tested with the service pack. In the past I had driver issues with Vista service packs, especially sound drivers.

guys i have a serious problem in hand.
I ordered a dell xps 15 with i5 480m few days back. i have not recieved the laptop till yet and when i track my order it says work in progress. The order details in the tracking tool suggest that my laptop will have a i7 740qm and i cannot understand how is this possible coz i ordered a i5 480m. I cannot understand why the details give it so. The question which comes to my mind is that is it possible that due to the launch of sandybridge and shortage of parts with dell they have upgraded my system to an i7??? Is it really possible???

Sounds unlikely. And I don't consider the i7 to be an upgrade from the i5, these quad-cores are hot and suck for battery life and nomad use.

That's a good question - will the 2720QM be more power hungry than the 2620M, under normal usage?

Also consider that the i7 2620M has the same TDP as the i5's...

From what I've heard it may run through your battery slightly faster during heavy use but during light use it should be about the same or slightly better due to the increased cores both physically and threaded.

The quad-cores can't be bad if Apple use them on their MBP's!

Although in this case I agree with you, I would also remind you that apple also used a one button mouse for about a decade. Not all that's silver and white is covered in gold. :D

I read somewhere that the xps 14 inch would be released later in the year (with sandy bridge). Anyone got any actual dates for this?

Yep that's the article. Does anyone know if/when there will be a new XPS 14". That's the perfect form factor for me and just a good little gaming/desktop replacement IMO.
