Hey guys, I updated my synaptics driver today only to find that I lost the ability to middle click, which I mainly use in firefox. Anyways, I tried installing the old drivers and it didn't work so I uninstalled them altogether. Now windows xp will not recognize the touchpad all together so when I try and reinstall the drivers, it says windows must have at least recognized a mouse to set it up. So now I am stuck and don't know how to get xp to recognize the touchpad at all. I am now just using a wireless mouse but would like to get this figured out. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem on 2 Dell M1210 PCs running XP pro. The touchpads stopped working about 6 months ago during some routine updates. The lastest driver, BIOS, and other updates from Dell do not help. The Synaptics driver will not install as it gives a message of conflicts with other pointing devices on my PC. My only pointing device is a Kensinton portable wireless mouse. Any fixes out there? I would like to have the touchpad working again. C54C54

Try this one:

Dont worry about it saying its only compatible with Studio Laptop 1555 and Studio XPS Laptop 1340. It should work fine with your system. Be sure to uninstall any current Synaptics Touchpad install, Reboot - then run this one. -
Batboy, Many thanks for your suggestion. My motherboard died, and I've been busy and traveling. I'm now trying to follow-up. The file download is ongoing, and I'll try an install after uninstalling and rebooting. Here goes... wish me luck..
