Did you guys install Dell Quickset?
-
Install Quick Set
-
For those wanting the factory software, start here
-
You scored the same as him, and everyone else with the 540M. The "Graphics" only uses the integrated Intel gpu, and the "Gaming Graphics" uses the GT 540M.
-
Found a newer driver for the GT 540m than the stock one provided in the installation cd.
Downloadable here:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R297049.exe
Laptopvideo2go thread:
DELL drivers 265.94 and 266.39 Mobile - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
Installed & works fine. Running 3dmark06 soon
*Stock driver is the 265.94. Newer one is the 266.39 -
Now I did, thanks.
-
It actually got a 6.7 in both. In any case, like others mentioned, it's probably not accurate enough to be worried about.
-
Unless you added the WEI .exe to the Nvidia Control Panel to run solely on the the GT 540M, sorry, but you didn't get a 6.7 in graphics. This goes for every Optimus notebook made, not just yours. It's not rocket science, just simple programming knowledge.
-
I believe the graphics score that its posting is the built in graphics for the CPU.
-
Lettuce know your 3dmark + temps
-
Oh, and do you have to install the Intel Vid Drivers from the Dell website still? I've never had an Optimus powered computer
-
I don't get it, why they not provide BL KB. you said it left China , so i am assuming it made in Dell China factory ? But Dell China they provide BL KB . i 've ordered one from them
So, all i am saying is if it's made in Dell China than they should give you BL KB if you asked them earlier on Dell UK ?? -
Haha never had an optimus either. I dint use the website, jus installed all the drivers from the cd.
-
Heat issue is really there. Annoying fan off and on...terrible.
Is anyway I can return i7 and order i5 and not pay restocking fee? -
I don't think we've seen any temps from dual core systems, so exchanging for i5 may not leave you any better off.
-
You have to order the other laptop first, but if you do that they will usually waive the restocking fee. Call them and get a confirmation # from them first.
-
How does programming knowledge come into play? I did not modify anything or force the discrete card to run all the time. I ran WEI the first time I booted the laptop and I got the same score for 'Graphics' as well as 'Gaming graphics'. I don't see what the big deal is. Like I said, WEI's scoring inaccuracy makes it more or less silly to argue about.
-
It's not a big deal to most, but I for one know what the score should be because I know how windows calculates it. When I see a new laptop come out and someone posts an incorrect benchmark result, especially one that is so common sense wrong to me, I feel the need to explain the result is wrong because I can "see" down the road more posts on howcome "he" got this and "I" got that. For me, I would rather correct you now, than explain 10 pages from now why 20 other people got a 5.9 in graphics and how you got a 6.7. It's absolutely nothing against you. Just preventative maintenance down the road.

Have a follow-up question about bluetooth though.... if I would use that to connect my bluetooth mouse as I could save one USB port, I am currently using IR mouse, it needs a transmitter on USB to connect. Since there are only three USBs, I want to save one for that. I never used bluetooth mouse before, so anybody knows how that works. Appreciate with the replies thanks....
-
It works quite well. Just use Windows' Add Device and hit connect on the Bluetooth mouse (this is a one-time thing). After that, it should work like any other wireless mouse.
-
I ran prime95 on my system and didn't get very promising results
it was running fine for a bit then the temps spiked up to 92 99 97 98 and the intel monitor showed the clock speed slowing until it was below 2.2
it is now running at 2.5-2.4 with temps from 80-82 -
Which CPU do you have? I think you might have to get that fixed by Dell. That's extreme overheating IMO.
-
I have the 2720
-
is anyone having trouble with the optimus software (ie the gpu never turns on and you are stuck with the integrated graphics for everything)?
-
Seems like there are problems of consistency across Dell sales people - as keeps coming up here. I spoke to something like 7 people by a mixture of mail, chat and phone. Everyone adamant that there is no UK BL keyboard - and that it's not available in Ireland either, as was mentioned here.
Then I mailed the boss of my account manager who sat on it for 4 days and then passed it on to someone who said, in effect, sorry it's too late now, order is dispatched, I'll keep an eye on it and look for an opportunity to swap your keyboard. Thing is that when I sent that email it wasn't even in production! Maybe there'll be an after-sale feedback form for me to impotently whinge in.
Maybe the price I paid for being eager to get the laptop is that my keyboard is destined to be dark. As well as, you know, the actual price I paid, which I guess will come down pretty soon. -
That's typical for Dell and most other large suppliers - one hand not really knowing what the other is doing. I ordered on the 9th (in the UK) with the UK backlit keyboard and the laptop has just 'Shipped' this morning 15 days ahead of the EDD...so the UK BL KB's must be available??
If I were Dell, I would ship you one FOC. Probably why i'd make a cr@p businessman!
-
Perhaps you'd like to start another thread explaining to us how Windows calculates WEI? You know, preventative maintenance down the road...
-
It wouldn't be a new thread, it would be a book. Maybe I can write "WEI for Dummies". I would give you 25% off just for calling in and ordering, but only if you act fast.
-
I didn't re-install the driver for the intel power boost monitor widget thing. Does this have to be installed for the CPU to do power boost and go above 2.2? I just have the basic win 7 gadget that shows me the CPU and RAM usage in all the different colors and it never shows above 2.2?? Is this because I have to install that intel power boost monitor or just because that gadget is not capable of showing the power boost?
-
Hmmm...I ordered mine on the 8th and Dell's still says Work in progress :-( The fact that people on the 9th have them shipped already, does that mean there's a problem with mine? I'm getting suspicious because other people ordering after have had status changes but I haven't :-( (No backlit keyboard). Got my 8GB of Crucial RAM and Sony Blu-Ray writer sitting here waiting for it's new home...
-
It is fairly irritating but thats dell for you looking at this thread, I ordered on the 7th and my status has only just in the last 24 hours changed to "In Production".
-
Does Mcafee uninstall successfully without having to do a clean install of Win 7 ?
-
Phew! Was beginning to think it was just me and Dell messing up my order....Guess I've got to be a little more patient :-D
-
Similar to mine. Ordered on the 6th and changed to "In Production" yesterday.
-
did anyone succeed in getting a discount coupon?
-
I have two orders in, the first order was placed 3/8 and went "In Production" late on 3/11 and remains there today. 2nd order, placed 3/13, is in "Delivery Preparation" as of this morning. Go figure...
-
I ordered on the 8th March and it has changed from ( in production) yesterday to shipped today, im in the UK, i checked the tracking number its coming from Shanghai, China , the estimated delivery was 01/04/2011 but guess its coming alot earlier than expected,
-
It will uninstall successfuly, but not completely. You should always go behind an ativirus, malware, and spyware program uninstall with a registry cleaner such as ccleaner. The programs themselves never uninstall everything except for the norton removal tool, which, of course can only be used on norton products. I think pcdecrapifier will do a better job of removing these programs than the programs' own uninstallation methods.

coupon code : 932N$0ZCCHWZB9

Thanks NoSlow... good to know.

I can't get the search tools to work in this forum.
It looks like Lojack isn't even being offered on the XPS 15 configurator anymore. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll even see my computer before the end of the month. -
Just got my XPS 15 and uploaded a short comparison to my old Vostro 1500. Also, when I checked the battery it had 75% remaining and 2 hours and 41 minutes showing. I got the 56W battery. I'm thinking I will get more out of it with a full charge. Also my Vostro is heavier. The XPS feels a bit lighter which is great for the lap.

Great thread - very helpful! I'm wondering if there is any Dell bloatware that people think is worth keeping? Dell Stage (I think this was previously known as Dell Dock) seems to get some positive reviews in other threads. Do people find this useful on a Windows 7 machine? Is it such a tax on system resources that it should always be removed? Any other bloatware worth keeping? (I certainly intend to uninstall the antivirus trial version, etc.)
-
Is Lojack a deal breaker for you? I don't know much about it. Seems like you may be better off without Lojack than without a computer, which wouldn't help you if you didn't have Lojack, but wouldn't help if you didn't have the computer either. Funny how that works out.
-
Is Full HD screen?
Can you do some heat test, like in this thread? -
Yep. FHD.
And I just got a 6.7 on the "gaming graphics" section and a 5.9 in "Graphics" section of the built-in performance rater. -
When you get time run the battery down from 100% and time it as the battery metre is unpredictable.
Also you can disable battery charging when plugged in (on l701x you press f3 and switch tabs to battery life) by doing this you don't have to rely on their being an auto shutoff (not sure they are automatic) and will help the length of the battery.
Thanks -
Good evening,
I'm a new user of the forum and I'm Italian, so sorry for my bad English.
I'm going to buy an XPS and I've the possibility to choose an XPS 17 with i5 2520 (2.5 GHz) or i7 2630QM (2.0 Ghz) at the same price of the notebook.
Should I choose the quad-core o the dual-core, considering the overheating problem of the quad?
