That is a bit odd. Mine has come via the Netherlands (only once, though it spent a day there) and via Walsh Western and Syncreon, rather than UPS. Wonder why they have different routes. It's coming today which means it will have taken 5 days (including a weekend) to get here.

They added 'merge items' to mine in Netherlands so maybe the Germany scan is getting that stuff ready for you.

It's item number 451-11599 on my invoice. I'll see if it has another number on it when it turns up, if you like

    451-11599 Battery : Primary 6-cell 56W/HR LI-ION (KIT)

Hoping the 'kit' part means it includes a charger, though probably not. Guess it just means 'in box'...

I can't seem to find that on the Dell UK website :( really wish i'd added it but it didn't click in my brain that it came with the 9 cell bulge battery as standard and now I want the 6 cell for portability and to make it fit in my laptop case!

Hmm you're right, it doesn't seem to be there as a separate item in 'accessories' but it's still available to pick in the 'accessorize my dell' tab when you're buying the machine. Try getting on to them via chat, i'm sure they can sort you out. Not cheap though - £125! But as you say, I want it to go into a sleeve and backpack.

That's what I did, too. Even thought he 2630QM wasn't available at the time, I'd still have done that because like you, I don't do that many things that are sped up by a quad-core.

Ouch! £125 - Maybe it can wait 'till next month then, I thought I was being molested for money when Apple want £99 for their MBP batteries - £125 for one that's technically WORSE than the one that comes with is a sting!

So has anybody found out what make and model the blu-ray writer in the new XPS15 L502X is? I've just bought a Sony BD-5730S which i tried to stick into an random dell (not XPS) here at work in someone's laptop but doesn't fit cause it's thicker...Dell seem to also use a slim-line drive in certain models.

Well mine arrived, which is good. The right trackpad button doesn't work though, which isn't. Flown halfway around the world and it'll have to go back for something daft like that

The non-backlit keyboard is chicklet / island style - i think that was asked the other day.

    Bummer...

When did you order yours? Mine's 9 days and still at the initial 'Work In Progress' stage :-( I think they've forgotten about my order but can't complain yet as estimated delivery date is 1st April. Do you happen to know if your optical drive is a 'regular' hight or slimline one? (there's very little in the difference). As mentioned above I took a risk and bought a full hight (laptop Sony drive).

Well -Dell seem to be setting carbon records with my XPS as it's now also been to South Korea yesterday and has just touched down in Almaty, Kazakhstan!? I had an email from UPS saying that delivery would be tomorrow too...hmmm, we'll see!

The optical drive is about 12.5mm high at the widest and has the step down where the head and spindle arent. Looks to be a slimline one - I got a Sony AD-7690H for a different machine a few weeks ago and it looks to be the same size.

I ordered on the 4th. It went into production on the 11th or 12th and went to 'Shipped' on the 13th. They do look to work on weekends.

It's a nice machine, though Flash in Firefox worked initially and then started crashing. Disabling hardware accelleration sorted it. I really dont want to go back to my 5 year old HP while this one gets sent back.

That's good to know. I'm always fascinated with the complex logistics of companies like UPS. And of course, I did want to be a cargo pilot once...before I realised that I didn't have the relevant qualifications or money to achieve them, that is! :)

@Zygotic - that's a PITA for you, can't they just send an engineer 'round to fix it. Be cheaper for them in the long run and better for customer relations, rather than shipping two ways all over? What am I thinking? Logic?! Sorry scrub that - sending it back to China makes much more sense, doesn't it?!

Did you pay for uber-delivery or something?

If it does have to go to China, maybe they could sort me out a BL keyboard tho :) But I'm hoping I can get them to let me keep this one while they send me a new one, iike WD do with disks. They can put a hold on my credit card if they want.

Though I just gave it a long hard press on the broken button and it's now working. Which is worse - if there's a dry joint or something on the button i've now hidden the symptom and they won't believe there's anything wrong. Blarg.

Interesting - Cougar Point with B2 stepping. That's the one that had the recall. Doesn't matter if only the 6Gb/s SATA ports are used though. Was it known that B2 was in the L502x?

That shows revision 05, as does windows device manager. So that's B3, not B2. Maybe Hwinfo isn't up to date.

I am going to order one of these but I am not sure if I should go with the i5-2410M or i7-2720QM. Someone said that these CPUs are upgradable so if that is the case the i5 might be a better option. Does anyone know if the i5s run cooler? I am looking for gaming as well as light graphic work, but of course it would be nice to have a system that will still perform nicely in a few years. Also looking at getting the 8x DVD-R as opposed to the Bluray-RW since the drive is only rated at 2x. I might like the idea better of getting an HD caddy and running an SSD as the main drive and using a mechanical for extra storage in the caddy. Does anyone know if the caddy would be hot swappable with the optical drive? Is there a screw(s) holding in the optical drive?

Here are the 2 configurations I am considering. I am using the EPP store with the $100 coupon:

    i5-2410M, 8x DVD-RW, GT540 2GB, 6GB Ram, 640 GB HD, 1080p w/face, 9 Cell, Backlit Keyboard, 6230+BT -- $1084.64 (After tax)

    i7-2720M, BluRay-RW, GT540 2GB, 6GB Ram, 640 GB HD, 1080p w/face, 9 Cell, Backlit Keyboard, 6230+BT -- $1495.94 (After tax)

The service guide shows that the CPU is socketed. yeah.

I'm sure i'd seen a response giving similar temps on an i5 as we're seeing on i7s, but I can't find it again now...

It's not hot-swap, no. The optical drive is screwed in, and i'm pretty sure it's screwed in from above, underneath the keyboard. Maybe a USB optical drive is your answer?

IIRC though the BR drive is 2x for BR, 8x for DVD and 42x for CD. I'm pretty sure that's it - different recording densities so different speed rating for same angluar velocity and all that...

    Tiny little tip of advice:
You might want to forgo the RAM upgrade. IT's $60 to upgrade to 6GB on Dell's website, but you can buy an 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Laptop RAM upgrade kit on newegg for around $80. I'm not entirely sure how easy it is to upgrade the RAM on these things though.

He may be using the top spec'd option in which the ram and hdd upgrade comes standard. Mine came with those specs on the $1299 option as standard, and it was cheaper than configuring the other parts with a lower spec'd unit not even counting the ram and hdd.

Order 2410M 3/8, shipped 3/14, delivered 3/16 in the United States.

Absolutely amazing. A great step up from the old MacBook Pro, runs my games full resolution with full settings (at least with Source games), and I seem to be shooting for 6--7 hours of battery (extended) just surfing the Internet.

It is a little larger than my old system, but it is worth the extra size just to have the ports on the back of my computer again. Speakers are impressive, and the sound through headphones is the most impressive I've seen since the Powerbook days (I'm picky about noise here).

Cheers - I'm always amazed at the level of hyperbole put around about 'not wanting to go far from your desk with this heavy laptop' - Heavy? Hardly. I wish they'd stop banging on about that with laptops like this Dell. It's only a couple lb's difference to the most svelte laptops with decent specs, and let's face it, if you need this sort of power on the go then weight is pretty low on the agenda. As usual the CNET 'Review' was more of a very brief passing opinion!
