In that picture of the wireless card with the wires disconnected...what is the extra gray wire?? I only have the two, white and black, and this is partly because I didn't get the TV tuner but he has the TV tuner and both wires are connected to that and still has that extra gray wire??

May I ask which coupon codes you used? I tried various configs, but I can't get anywhere near your savings because it won't let me stack during check out. Thanks!

In the listing of deals, find "Premium Weekend Deals". then at checkout, click the link next to coupons to find the Coupon Corner PC Coupons, and in EPP there should be a $100 off coupon.

Yeah that's pretty much it. The key is that EPP sale that starts you with a $420 discount and already includes the 1080p screen.

I honestly was really surprised they let the coupon stack.

When I ordered my L501x thru my Georgetown student discount program it was essentially the same price as the normal consumer site, but it had all the upgrades (minus the screen, it was an additional $130) maxed out. So in the end same price, better components. And the 1080p screen and backlit KB were a tad bit cheaper thru my student discount than the normal page.
Plus they had a $100 EPP coupon they applied, so in the end it was a better deal going this route.

This was last Nov, no idea what student/EPP specials or discounts they run now.

I ordered the XPS 15, but when I check the order status there's a problem...
The "Bill To" area says "N/A" and so does the "Ship To" area...

This is the first time I'm ordering from Dell in like 8 years, so is this how it's supposed to be or is there something wrong?
I am logged into my Dell account....

    SOLVED:
apparently this is normal... read another thread... thanks

I went ahead and purchased my original config (see sig) at this discounted price -- over $200 cheaper! My original purchase hasn't shipped yet but the customer service office is closed. So I'm hoping I can cancel my original order on Monday. Though if they offer me $200 off to keep the order, I'll take that and cancel the new order instead.

128GB is just not quite enough for a HD in my experience.

180GB is just enough and 256GB is plenty.....

It 's not for the day to day stuff, it's for when you suddenly have to move a big set of data, or copy a backup set, or do a database edit......

256GB gives you the ability to keep backup sets on the SSD itself for when you're on the road or whatever.....

I would buy the 180GB if they had it, but they don't. I use over 70GB just in programs and 30GB in music, so I want a little extra space should I decide to add movies/games in the future.

I wish there was a dual HDD option... I only really need to put all my OS and programs which is ~50GB so a 80GB SSD should be fine for me, but my music and other data is 200GB+ so i could hava a HDD for that.

I mean i don't really think data would take much improvement from the SSD and I could still copy over stuff I'm working on to the SSD if the boost is needed...

Well, I guess I could use a USB 3.0 HDD for the same purpose + 80 GB internal SSD...

Isn't there a option to put a HDD instead of optical drive? or am i thinking of AW m15x?

Are there USB 3.0 SSDs? I wonder how fast those would be?
I guess you kind of could just put a SSD into a USB 3.0 enclosure... hmmm

Anyone have this laptop with Adobe CS5 photoshop or premiere installed?

I am curious if the ddr3 ram on the gpu 525 or 540 is good for hardware acceleration by the Mercury Playback Engine. The gpu may not be recognized by default and needs to be 'hacked' in adobe cs5 which can be found googling. My concern is some sites identify the need for at least 1gb of gddr5 and claim ddr3 is inadequate.

my new XPS 15 was delivered 30 mins ago. Got to say my first impressions are good.

In the process of reloading Windows 7 Professional and tweaking it a bit. Haven't noticed the fan come on yet, seems cooler than my 1640.

Will do some testing on it as soon as I get it the way I like it.

Well, suffice to say - it gets very hot. Dell gave me a new laptop once since temps were in the 90C+ range - I have just run this thing maxed out and it was 95C on the MB and 88-93C on the CPU - Fans were not maxed out, probably 1 step below max.

I ran Premier Pro downscaling a 1080p vid to 720p whilst running Lightroom converting 500 5D2 RAW files to small jpegs whilst running Photoshop CS5 editing images with a Firefox window open playing the iPlayer. The good news is that it was still very responsive, more so that my massively cooler faster desktop build with double the RAM!

The bad news, my ambient temps can't be much above 20C - so taking this into a hot environment and pushing it will easily see this machine crash, if 100C is the BIOS limit. I don't feel 100% confident taking this machine into the field in a European Summer, i'll leave all my converting to do in the air conditioned hotel room! As long as you keep an eye on the temps then I don't see it as a big issue. And remember the fans still had at least 1 step to go to full blast.

Still, ok - it runs a tad hot, but only if pushed really hard. CPU was at 2.6-2.9 GHz all the time.

You shouldn't have to keep an eye on the temps at all, because the processor does it for you. The processor uses a lower speed to keep the temperature below 100 C, and can downclock to 800 MHz if need be. Its performance will be lower in a hotter environment, but it shouldn't be in any danger.

    1) Check either the Dell QuickSet options or the Control Panel. One of those places should have the setting to make clicking both = middle button.

    2) The XPS 15 is designed to have the Bluetooth built into the Intel WiFi card. So there is no separate antenna provided.

I don't have my L502X yet, but on my m1530 when I go to the Mouse settings, there is a Dell Touchpad tab that allows you to launch a separate window with these settings in it. I'm assuming something similar is being used with the newer models. You might also have a Taskbar icon for the trackpad which you can right-click.

Yeah. Mine still says 3/23 (Ordered 2/26), and still In Production despite 7-day shipping. I decided to order a new one today with intent to cancel the old one because the "Premium Weekend Sale" with the same config (+$100 EPP coupon) is over $200 cheaper, though Lojack isn't even offered on them now (go figure). But get this: My EDD for the reorder is April 8th. Though, I might try to see if I can wring a larger discount out of them for my original order for the hassle, assuming they actually do have Lojack fixed up.

Thanks for this. I just ordered for $171 less than my original order. I will have to cancel the original and send it back to Dell (already shipped), but what a great deal. Too bad, it is the same configuration, you would think they would just credit you back the difference.

Put the cart together and then phone Dell. They usually give a better deal over the phone. I was able to get a few free upgrades for the same price. Be sure to have a company to tell them if you call EPP - (AAA seems to be a good one).

The US EPP # is 1-866-328-1898

Does anyone know which type of SATA connector the optical drive uses? I'm going to add an aftermarket SSD and am trying to decide if I should put it in that bay or go through the trouble of moving the mechanical drive to that bay depending on which has the faster (II v III) SATA connection. Thx.
