i have problem with my DELL STUDIO XPS 1640
    T9400 2.53GHZ 6mb kesh
    4GB RAM 1066
    500GB hard disk 5400

i have problem with laptop sound....
if speaker level is 0-60 proc all is fine, but if speaker level is 70-100 proc, then hard disk begin work at max... sound and programs crash... then i put mute or slow down speaker level and hard disk again working calmly, not a max performance...

i not understand why hard disk working at max performance when speaker level more thant 70 proc...

    it is really strange.

i tryed to instal another audio driver, not helped...

maybe to strong magnetic field from speeker? if speeker to strong?
I think that is HARDWARE problem not SOFTWARE

    any help?

i try to play music through headphones and hard disk working normal...
i guess to strong speekers... to strong magnetic fields from magnets...

i am alone with this problem ? need to test with loud music and with VLC media player where speeker levels can be 200-400 proc for example... but my problem begin more than 70 proc speekers level and louder music

any opinion? maybe someone have the same laptop? can someone make that test with the same laptop?

    sorry for my bad english

I know what you are talking about. My old HP 17 inch laptop (ZD8000 with Pentium 4, eww) had a similar problem. Basically putting the laptop on around 90% or above volume and using iTunes for example would cause the hard drive light to come on. If I then tried to do anything (such as lower the volume or use another program) there would be a 10 to 20 second delay. During this time the music would play fine. After lowering the volume the computer acted normally again. I think it has something to do with the built in "sub" vibrating and affecting the hard drive. Maybe the computer put the hard drive in a reduced usage state to protect it.

I never attempted to fix the problem on my HP, and my Dell XPS 1645 does not have this problem. You can always try calling Dell.

i am thinking how to resolve this problem.... :( but this is hardware problem....

if "sub" vibrating and make affect to the hard drive, then this problem should be in all dell XPS 16 with that speaker...

someone who have dell xps 16 (1640) make test with speaker on 100-200% speaker level on loud music please :)
i am waiting opinion :) i wannt to know that i am not alone with this problem :D

    sorry for my bad english

I too have this problem with my laptop for nearly two years. When volume increases, hdd begins to slow down. I tested with hdd benchmark tools and higher the volume slower result the hdd reading rate (even down to zero).
I do not think it is related to vibration since my hdd do not have a anti vibration sensor or sth. It may be related to magnetic field from the speaker. However I read somewhere hdd magnet should not be affected from speaker magnet since it is much more powerful.
