    Why would that be?
Does it have more dust clogging the fan and heat sink because it's older?
Or is the video card hotter?
Are the ventilation systems that much different between them?

The M1730 is just much better designed than its predecessor. For example, the SLI video is located near the rear edge of the laptop to allow maximum airflow and heat dissipation, while the M1710 has the video card located near the right center of the system (which is why the M1710's keyboard's right side gets so hot). That, and the newer CPU and GPU use a smaller fab process for lower heat yet better performance.

The M1730 is a bit heavier compared to the M1710. But performance wise and heat wise, the M1730 eats the M1710 :p
