They are offfering to exchange my 8 month old defective xps 1645 (sig) with the new xps 17 configured to my old system. Should I do it?

Does the xps 17 have a better graphics card?

It depends on what the Spec of the machine they are offering you is.

But the XPS 17 has to come with either the 435m or 445m which I believe are marginally superior to the 4670.

If they are also offering the i7 processor, I would definitely take the offer.

They are offfering the core i7 720 QM, 1600 x 900, 4gb ram with a possible upgrade to GT 445 (if not it'll be the Gt435)

Does the xps 17 have a backlit keyboard?

The backlit keyboard is an option in the US, $25 I think.

If you don't move the XPS 16 around much, take the 17. The screen is noticeably worse than the XPS 16 900p ones though.

Are you sure its the i7 720? The XPS 17 only comes with the i7 740(obvously i5/i3 as well) which is not compatible with the 435 only 445 and you would have to have 9 cell battery aswell.

I would expect it to be the i7 740 with GT445 and 9 cell and if thats the case then its a no brainer....take it.

I just recently went through a system exchange process for my SXPS 1645 that had serious overheating problems. The agents through Dell Chat were claiming the only system exchange is for a XPS 17 which I didn't want. I'm in college and carrying around a 15in laptop is kinda big but a 17in would be brutal. I eventually just emailed michael dell (corporate office) and they ordered a XPS 15 as a replacement for me.

    Previous System:
Studio XPS 16 Notebook (SXPS 1645)
    Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
    6GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
15.6 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD WLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather XPS 1645
320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
    MOD,CRD,NTWK,6200,CNB

    XPS L501X
92 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz / up to SC 2.93GHz / 6M
    6GB,DDR3,2 DIMM
JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3
Tray Load Blu-ray Disc BD-Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
    Metalloid Aluminum (WLAN) L501X
NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 2GB graphics
    15.6FHD TLF LCD L501X
    Backlit Keyboard (Internal) – English
640GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200
    Dell Bluetooth 3.0

If I was you I would go for the exchange, I'm loving my XPS 15. Worse come to worse and your not satisfied with the replacement cant you just send the replacement back and keep your SXPS 1645 and request a repair?

Hmm. Ok thanks for the comments everyone. I'm a little dissappointed people seem to think the screen is lower quality. We'll see what happens.

How do people who have the xps 17 feel about its build quality? Does it feel like something high quality?

ok i just got an email from them. Looks like mark7402 was correct. They upgraded it to the gt 445 with 3GB ram, core i7 740, they upgraded me to the 6 gb ram and also upgraded my hard drive to the 640 GB version with the 9 cell.

I suppose it really is a no brainer at this point...

17" is heavy, screen possibly is not as good but not by much. The rest is massively in the XPS 17's favour. Simples.

Nice. How does it handle games? And is it plagued by any of the throttling issues posed by the 1645? How about the build quality, is it nice?

Is there anything else i should know about this laptop?

I guess I should start scanning through all the xps 17 topics :)

I don't think anyone who has the latest XPS has had throttling issues. They run hot, but they don't throttle.

It's about as heavy as the SXPS 16. The SXPS 16 has a really dense metal base, which was incredibly sturdy but also god damned heavy too. The XPS 17 uses an aluminum(base)-plastic(base/sexyback)-aluminum(palmrest)-plastic(bezel)-aluminum(lid) sandwich for the build. The build quality is nice, everything fits together nicely. Three sources (one review, one user here, and now me) have noticed that the palmrest 'clicks' into place once a day and never again-- if you put pressure right bellow the keyboard, it'll go pop and the first few times it does you'll think you have imagined it because you'll put pressure on it again and it wont pop... until you open it up the next day and you hear a slight pop again.

The 9-cell battery does not jiggle like the SXPS 16's does.

There is no plastic over the screen, so you don't get double-glare and crud sticking to it.

The exhaust vent doesn't blow debris all over the screen (this is reason enough to accept the change imo, so irritating)

    It has a big butt.

Overall, the laptop makes a good impression. Yesterday me and my brother were browsing the internet together, and while using the SXPS 16, he commented rather aptly that "this computer (SXPS16) is like the sexy chick you want to be with before you realize how dirty she is, and that one (XPS17) is like the average-looking girl you want to spend time with after getting to know her." And it's true, this girl isn't photogenic but she's rather elegant when you meet her in person. She has a sexy butt :)

That being said, the screen is somewhat below average and that sucks, but most of my disappointment with it is due to the fact that I had a 1080p display in my SXPS16. You will notice the poorer viewing angles though.

As for the temperature, every laptop on earth gets hot under stress. This one is no exception, the fan will kick in and it'll sound like a jet taking off, but it handles the heat well and the palmrest never goes past body temperature (for a human, that is). There's nothing more to say about it. The components stay as cool as they do on every well-designed laptop, but the heat never really comes to your attention, as it doesn't on a very well-designed laptop.

Yeah really stick to your guns with DELL if anything email Michael Dell directly. PM me for his email. Its gets delegated to executive support.

on mY 2 year old Studio 17 they wanted to give me a XPS 17.

Which by all measure was superior to my Studio 1737.

EXCEPT for 1 thing. The 1920x1200 RGB LED Display. Which I had on my old system. They tried to dismiss it and play up how big of an upgrade the new XPS 17 was (and it was) But I trumped them with my argument was What is the MOST important part of a Laptop??? They said the CPU. I said no its the Display which you look at all the time.

Studio XPS only has a 1600x900 display and its not RGB LED.

They ended up having to give me a brand new Alienware M17xR2.

Which is the only system with an RGB LED display And Bluray Drive. Just email Michael Dell

My Specs are in sane now easily 4x what my studio 1737 cost. Playing Crysis Warhead on Ultra settings like 70 fps now.

Nice score, Ice, and I agree 100%. Personally, I'd settle for slower CPU/GPU and everything else if the display is significantly superior, and in this case, the RGB LED LCD is much better.

Oh all the way. knock on wood I will always try and purchase a system with an RGB LED backlight or as is the case now B+RGB LED.

I need an XPS 15 for school because I look like an idiot in class whipping out this HUGE monster

PLUS the XPS 15 does have B+RGB LED.

i think its too late now..part of the problem was that its a time sensitive issue..i have to leave the country for 6 months in 10 days..i dont have time to argue with them and bargain...

nice score though, had i known about emailing michael dell i would have done that.
