I called Dell XPS yesterday and the opperator offered me to send in my laptop and they would replace the GPU and motherboard to fix the problem. Recently, my 8600m GT was overheating when I gamed (even with a cooling pad).
I am quite glad considering that I have the basic waranty!

This is good news for all of you with faulty fans and GPUs!

They have always been replacing the motherboard and fans if your motherboard crapped out.

What I'm hoping for is that 10 months or so from now, when the new XPS's have been out for a while, Dell will give us a refreshed system with fixed GPUs when our 8-series burn out.

Well, of course. What do you think they're doing, ignoring warranties? They're probably just going to replace it with the same GPU model, with the same material flaw.

How long do they keep older systems in reserve for warranty purposes? Because I know they replace with the newer system if they run out.

I don't really know, but I can't imagine it being more than 6 months or so. Well, there are actually still a few m1210s on Dell's outlet website, but I don't think those are for warranty purposes.

the man on the phone said they would replace it with a new non faulty nvidia chip

what is the point of changing chip if mine still works... it is a preventive mesure to stop the problem. he also said he would install new fans...

You said it was the overheating issue. So I'm guessing, no it doesn't work because it was overheating. And as for the faulty GPU, I was talking about the fault that is believed to effect all 8600s, which, as far as I know, they have not fixed. All they've done is update the BIOS and cross their fingers your laptop survives through the warranty period.
