Hey guys - I've been out of tap with the internet for three weeks now, so I'm swamped trying to catch up on old threads I have subscriptions to. :(

But anyways, does anyone have good links or official sources on what Dell is doing as far as Alienware is concerned? I know a LOT of people were saying they heard rumors (nothing confirmed, at least not from what I gathered) that the XPS 1730 isn't being made anymore, and the only ones circulating now on the retail sector are refurbs and used ones. Is Dell going to replace this with an Alienware computer for its gaming line??

I'm just curious for the future, as I eventually plan to get a computer with a quad core and bigger RAM capability than 8 GB, so I was wondering if I should stick with and look for Dell deals or go to another company...

The XPS M1730 is being replaced by the new Alienware M17X.

What you see is what you get... meaning, the current available options on the dell site are the best you will see for the m1730. It is in fact @ end of life and will eventually disappear completely - replaced with the AW brand.

you already know my feelings on Dell vs looking for another company :(

I think Dell would be substituting their XPS line for the AW brand so that there will be no competition among the two.

Yes, the XPS gaming line is being phased out for AW. The XPS name will now be tied to the Studio line and the main focus there is multimedia.

It just doesn't make sense for Dell to continue making gaming machines that would compete with AW.

I was upset at first because I loved my XPS rigs (I had the Gen2 all the way up to the 1730 :)). That was until I took delivery of the M17x!

There is no comparison - the AW M17x was truly amazing and way better than the 1730 (especially in the design and build department).
