I had an issue with the 9 cell battery for my XPS M1330, Dell replaced it with a refurbished battery even though the computer is still under warranty. When I called to complain, I was told that all replacement parts from Dell are considered refurbished, even if they are new and never used since they have to be opened and tested. Does anyone know if this is true? How would a battery be refurbished anyway?

I believe it is true, Dell allways sends 'refubs' but they are new to my knowledge.

A laptop battery usually contains a microcontroller, with quite a few chips on there. It might be more cost effective to re-use the controller pcb and place it into a new casing with new batteries - hence refurbished.
Tried to refurbish a laptop battery myself one time, hell is to open the casing without destroying it. DELL has done a very good job in package design - it's quit hard to do it - hence protecting their market. -
Yeah, even a lot of their 'refurbs' from the Outlet are brand new.
Dell refurb battery really new?
