In a move that could almost be viewed as throwing in the towel, Dell has decided to halt production on four of its high-end XPS computers optimized for the gamer. Not all XPS computers will be killed off.

Rather, Dell will put its focus on gaming computers to Alienware, a division of high-end gaming computers, which Dell acquired two years ago.

Dell isn't a stranger to problems as of recent. The move comes amidst a recent redo of its laptop line and a recent announcement of the shutting down of Dell mall kiosks used for selling its computer systems among other things.

It's a no-brainer for Dell to put all of its eggs in one basket when it comes to these high-end systems. There's no need to have it's XPS line of high-end gaming machines compete with the already-owned Alienware brand of gaming machines.

If there's any downside from this it could be reflected by the pocketbooks of the potential buyers. Less mainstream competition could drive prices higher on gaming computers that already have price tags well beyond the $2,000 mark

Yes, they have quite a few new ones. It was just an interesting read as the production continues.

TO also include the WoW series XPS

The source for this article is The Wall Street Journal - they broke the story in May and other news outlets picked up on it. The story was followed by a quick denial by Dell, and as we can see, they are still selling XPS laptops and desktops. Although, it appears as though they will launch Studio XPS laptops to replace the current lineup.

I thought it would be new information, but this is quite old. It has been confirmed by Dell representatives that the XPS is going to be a sub brand now and leave the notebooks to be either Inspiron, Studio, or Alienware.

I think "killing off" was the wrong choice of words. The way they wrote the story, sounds like Dell is doing something really sad. Which I believe is not what's going to happen.

Instead, the XPS line is going to be "reborn" and merged with the Studio / Inspirons.
