I'd put in a Linux live CD and see if you can get any sound there. From there we'll know if it's a software or hardware problem.

    Hi sminar,

Sorry to hear about the laptop speaker issue. As you mentioned that you can hear sound using headphone so it could be either problem with the internal speaker hardware or the audio driver.

    Please suggest the below steps.

First run the windows troubleshooter for audio issues using this link
    No sound in Windows

    If issue not resolved then,
Click start> go to control panel & then find device manager.

If you do not find device manager in control panel list, you might have to change the category view on the top right to small icon option.

    Then look under audio device.

Right click on IDT driver & then uninstall it.

Restart your system & then download the IDT audio driver from this link under audio section

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

Reinstall the audio driver & check if this resolves the issue.

Otherwise click start and go to all programs.

Click on dell support center folder, then click pc checkup.

Run customer scan, Run test on the speaker. If you still do not get any sound from speaker then you might have to replace the laptop speaker.
Check your warranty details using below link.

I have n HP DV2 and my laptop speakers stopped working for the first time too!! Never knew it was such a common thing!! It works now but several days ago, I was watching YouTube and then all of a sudden it stopped working. I thought it was YouTube but it wasn't and I started to freak out. I plugged in my speakers and that worked. I Googled solutions and tried EVERYTHINg from inserting my headphones in and out numerous times, to detecting the problems but my laptop couldn't find any problem. I checked HP for any needed updates, and nothing. I searched and searched and searched, tried everything that people said, I even shut it down and pulled out the battery and it still did not work. Someone else did say he gave up and just turned it off, and the next day it just started working kinda like me. Some say to turn it off and turn it back on in safe mode or something but I did not know how to do that. This happened to me about two days ago, last night I used my speakers to watch YouTube. Turned it off, turned it on this morning and noticed it made its usual noise when you turn it on!! I WAS SO HAPPY!!! Wish I had a simple solution for everyone but don't give up.
