My Dell 1530 originally had a 3 year warranty and its going to expire in a few days. Dell quoted me 1 year in-home with accidental warranty for $348.93 and 2 year in-home with accidental warranty for $535.31. I've had too many problems with this laptop so I'm definitely going to extend the warranty, but is it me or do these prices sound ridiculously high? Has anyone else extended their warranty on their 1530?

Extending warranty outside of the initial purchase will always cost you an arm and a leg, that's just how Dell is. Since you've had it for so long and it's had multiple issues, why not just give it up for something better?

I wasn't really planning on moving to something better, but after seeing how much the 2 year extension would costs I just might. I just wanted to know if anyone else has extended their warranty on the 1530, and whether it was negotiable or not.

Often the Dell rep will quote you the high price and give you a one day 'discount', usually ~$100 off or so. As of today, I've never had anyone tell me they had their rep give them extended warranty for anything cheaper than ~$250-275/year.

If you've had so many problems with the laptop, why didn't you or Dell have it replaced in the last 3 years? Just curious.

I've had the motherboard replaced once, palmrest 2 or 3 times, and a bunch of other little things. They denied me a replacement because the palmrest/mouse issue wasn't severe enough. And not until recently did i reinstall SC2 and i see my CPU temps reaching high 70s and my GPU hitting 90 degrees.

$350 is paying 1/2 to 1/3rd of the price of a new SB equipped laptop for a 1 year extension. That wouldn't cut the value bar in my purchase decision.. maybe that's what Dell wants in the first place as well, by pricing it so high.

Probably right there. They want you to buy a new system every few years. They get extra money by selling the new system and don't have to worry about stocking parts for old systems.

They quoted me like $650-750 (forgot the exact value) for a 3-year extension 2 days after I got my system...I laughed them off the phone, I have 2 year warranty anything after that I would hope all the major issues are found and dealt with. 3 months, so far so good.

Also worth remembering if you have an Nvidia graphics card in your m1530 system you will automatically get a 12 month extended warranty for any problems relating to graphics card/motherboard overheating (on top of anything bought with your system).

e.g. you bought a 3 year warranty, so you have a 4th year of cover for free

NVIDIA GPU Update: Limited Warranty Enhancement Details - Direct2Dell - Direct2Dell - Dell Community

So - if you have an Nvidia graphics card you have an extra year of warranty!
(which will cover the most common problems with the system)

Thanks for the replies everyone, i'll most likely put that money into a 13 inch sb laptop instead. And thanks for the reminder tom, almost forgot about that warranty.

Unfortunately, my Sager NP2090 received no such support from either Nvidia or Sager when my 8600m GT died after 2 years of use. Part of the disadvantages of purchasing from a non-major brand.

Assuming the laptop came with 2 years standard warranty, and you upgraded it to 3 years, it's cheaper to upgrade warranty before purchase. Not sure how you got 5 years total though.

    I think he believed it was cumulative... 2 + 3 = 5 and not the 2 + 1 = 3

Thats brutal...either the warranty costs a lot more in the US or Dell has increased the prices.
I have extended the 3 year warranty of my 1520 last year for 1 additional year and it cost me about 100€, which was pretty reasonable. 2 years would have cost about 180€.

No it's five total. My warranty expiration is now 5/14/2016 instead of 5/14/2013 as when I got it. As to how I got it, they called me. Was on my list of things so I bought it.

Good deal, if they offered me that I would have done it. They wanted 3x that for going from a 2 year to a 5-year. May I ask the details of the deal?

It's 334 and change minus the 75 dollar gift card they gave me which is why I said about 260. E en at that without the card is a good deal. It extends my warranty from 5/14/2013 to 5/16/2016. And I'm probably gonna use the card for amity HDD lol. Their normal rate was 280 per year. So was a good deal. And if I have any issues I'm good with it being a comp for school.

Indeed, even 334 I would have definitely considered. $700 I just told them to shove it....They offered me a similar card, but still...

Is that just the standard in-home service, or was it full coverage (screen and such?). I might need to lean on them some...
