    Hello,

Will be getting my Dell xps 15 9550 with 1tb hdd and 32gb ssd. Iv'e read few posts about how to replace the hdd in the laptop, but would like to know if it's possible to run only one drive like Samsun Evo 850 500GB, without having to have the 32gb ssd and the 1 tb HDD? So just one hdd inside.

Sure, why not? If you plan to do that, why not get the XPS 15 with the bigger battery though? Trying to save weight?

    Hi,

Thanks for the replay. yes trying to save weight and also have a speedy drive. the bigger option is 250 UK pounds more expensive, and i dont rally need I7 and 16 gb ram.

Thinking though of canceling purchase and go for lenovo carbon X1 which I can get for the same price. there seem to be lot of Issues with Xsp and fan noice, or is that thing of a past?

1). Yes, it's possible to run just one drive. You have an M.2 drive slot, and a 2.5" SATA drive slot in that laptop that can accept drives.

2). Lenovo Thinkpad x1 Carbon OS an entirely different kind of notebook. It emphasizes being thin and light. It has a completely different class of CPU, GPU, and screen size.

gOki, Got my Xps yeterday. Seems to be full with bloatware and quite slow on booting tbh. Laptop as whole looks nice, good creen and very quiet. Lot of drivers that need to be updated as well.

Thinking of buyng 512 gb samsung evo m.2 ssd and use it as only drive. Can I just replace the 32 GB ssd drive and do clean win 10 install on the EVo 850 m.2 you think?

Yes, I'd recommend switching from RAID to AHCI mode in the BIOS and then perform your re-install. Goto the above link for instructions and a nice custom Win 10 ISO...

Yes, its too easy. Follow the link posted earlier. Gonzo's iso is the easiest way. Here are my simplifed instructions from that thread also. I used an 850 evo (didn't see the need for speed when I'm still running the 1tb as a storage drive) as its super cheap now.

thanks a lot for the simplifed instuctions. Been spending hours reading
various forums, Should I get the 500GB m.2 sata for, and just take out the mechanical drive to save weight. Dont think I will need more then 500 gig, so not sure if there is any pros having 2 drives. What you think?

    I got a 500 gb 850 evo, same price as a 256gb 950 pro.

I kept the 1tb for storage. Normally, I have all my movies and media stored on my synology server, but it will be nice to have the extra space as I travel and what not so its good to have a ton of media space available. I mean 500gb is still plenty, but I honestly see no benefit in taking out that 1tb drive unless you are upgrading to the larger battery. The weight savings are negligible, this isn't the lightest laptop but its certainly not particularly heavy. If you wanted weight savings and the most portability you'd have wanted to get a macbook air, xps 13, or something along those lines. More space is always good IMO. Especially when it costs you nothing.

Did you get the 850 EVO m.2. or 2.5" drive? I am looking to replace the 1TB + 32GB with just a 500GB 850 EVO 2.5", and am wondering if the process the same. Also, should I remove the 32GB SSD?

To do this laptop justice you should consider an NVMe drive to go in place of the 32gb drive due to the speed of them.

That is the plan for the future when prices go down. I just want to get a relatively cheaper mid-sized SSD to start

You can find some good offerings on eBay, lots of OEM samsung drives out there.
