Im using a dell xps l701x with a gt 435m with a i5 m 460, and i cant duplicate the display to a tv. it appears that the laptop display is being run off the intel graphics and the external tv is being run off the nvidia graphics. any help would be great.

Ok well since no one has taken a stab, from what i have gathered it is essentially impossible to do this, so you have to use the mini display port. if i "complain" to dell i bet i could convince them to send a mini display port to hdmi adapter for free. if anyone could confirm that this would fix the issue that would be awesome.

I've connected my L702x to an LCD TV via its HDMI output and it worked. I'd be surprised if there was enough difference between a L702x and an L701x that wouldn't work with the 701. But I get surprised a lot.

I did have to toggle thru the display functions to find the right setting. I don't have it here with me, but one of the function keys has an icon of a monitor. If you hold the Fn key while pressing the correct function key with an external monitor connected, it toggles through three states:

    Laptop display only,
    External monitor only,
Both laptop display and external monitor.

FWIW, my L702x has the low end Nvidia/Intel Optimus graphics, and both the laptop and the external TV have 1080P resolution. I was playing HD TV recorded via Windows Media Center, and I found that I had to display on the external monitor only, when displayed on both the laptop display and the external monitor, I got a lot of stuttering and herky-jerkiness. It was flawless on the just one or the other. I'm fairly certain this was the case even after forcing WMC to use the Nvidia graphics.

unfortunately it is different, as when you use windows + p it gives the option for clone and it just creates an imaginary clone monitor, and then extends onto the tv via the hdmi. basically the nvidia card is only capable of outputting one signal at a time or something, and since its hard wired to the hdmi port, completely bypassing the intel gpu it is unable to output the same image as what is on the laptops display.

Is there also a function key for monitor toggling? I think that's been on all the Dell laptops that have passed through my office in the last 12 years or so. I've got an old Latitude C840 here now that came with Win2K, and it's got that key, althought it's labelled "CRT/LCD". I tried the Win+P key, and that seems to be a different way of doing a similar kind of switching that works even with my multiple monitor desktop. If there's a function key, it might be worth trying. You might have to look and your manual to decipher the function key icons to find the right one.

In a bit of poking around, I found other L701x folks with external monitor via HDMI issues. I'n many cases it actually worked but with in correct resolutions. One person fixed his issue by using an different HDMI cable, a v1.4. Take a look at this thread:
