I used the Computer Management tool built into Windows Vista to change my partition sizes. I shrank C: in an effort to add another drive. Somehow after I shrank C: and made a new drive labeled F:, D: (the backup drive) disappeared from the drive tables.

So I tried to restart, and my laptop would no longer power up. Whenever I press the power button, the power LED would light up followed by the battery LED a few seconds later. That's it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

If it doesn't even get to the point where you could get into whatever BIOS setup Dells have, I don't see any way that could be caused by anything you did with disk partitions. Call Dell tech support and see what they have to say.

Get the Vista disk out and just format and reinstall.

If it does not even go to a screen that says no OS found, the BIOS, or anything like that, call Dell.

Yeah nothing shows up on the screen after I press the power button.

Could Mediadirect have something to do with it?

Take the hard drive out and try.

Do any lights come on? Any beeping? Any noise, like a fan or something?

When I press the power button long enough, the LEDs beside the power button would light up for a few seconds and I'd hear the computer hum a bit afterwards I hear a "click" and it dies down.

Try it with the battery out. And call Dell, that's what you paid them for.

I removed the hard disk and the same thing happens. Oddly enough, as long as the battery is stuck in, the LEDs between the Home and Power buttons do not light up at all. When I take the battery out and press the power buttons for several seconds, all the LEDs light up for a few seconds and I hear something whirring inside before it clicks and dies again.

How long have you had it? What kind of warranty do you have?

I'd be calling Dell. Something is wrong.

I have a 3-year full replacement warranty so I might as well send it in.

The Dell rep asked me to return it because it does seem something is wrong. I just got it today too haha.

Yeah there is nothing you can do to the hard drive that would cause the laptop to cease booting. It sucks it just died on your like that, but at least it did now rather than when you had it all setup with your data.
