On account of slight grainyness on my 1920 x 1200 monitor, Dell sent me a 2nd identically configured XPS M1530. I've had both side by side for about a week now and have been able to observe some things.
1. The two monitors are identical; both have the slight grainyness on white backgrounds. My conclusion is that the Samsung SEC3255 monitor, the only one with the 1920 x 1200 resolution, is going to have the grainyness. It's very slight and not a big deal because the screen is nice and bright and has good colors. IF you want the super hi resolution, you WILL have the grainyness.
2. Fit and finish of the black plastic horizontal bezel (where the cam resides) varies. The 2nd computer is nice and tight on the right side but on the left side, it clicks a little and is a little loose. It's really not the biggest deal. The 1st computer is tight on both sides.
3. As reported by others, regarding the 2 silver plastic pieces- one on the right and one on the left of the touch-sensitive media buttons- on my 1st computer, the one on the right sticks up a little on the inner edge and does not fit flush with the brushed aluminum panel. Both are flush on the 2nd computer. It isn't a big deal for me, but Dell will send me new silver plastic pieces.
4. There are differences in the blue lights on the touch-sensitive media buttons on the black plastic strip. The 1st computer is nice and bright, for example, when you touch the volume buttons. However, the 2nd computer is very dim blue. At first I thought it was broken but when I turned the room lights off, I could see the dim blue. Dell Tech Support explained that there's no brightness adjustment control. Some people get the bright lights and some get the dim. I like the brighter blue lights.
5. The DVD drives are different. The 1st computer has an OPTIARC and the 2nd computer has a MATSH1TA. I rarely watch movies on the computer and I don't really use the drive for anything else. The only observation is that the MATSH1TA ejects much much more quietly than the OPTIARC. I don't mind the noise.
6. I have the 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive and for that configuration, Dell only uses the Seagate. For both computers, the hard drive is very noisy, chattering and talking constantly. As I said elsewhere, it doesn't bother me THAT much because it's almost like my computer is talking to me. But if it annoys you, there is an adjustment in the settings you can make that is described elsewhere on this forum. I have not made that adjustment.
7. The keyboards are different. The 2nd computer's keyboard is noisier and chatters more. At first I thought it was a difference in the spring apparatus, but later I discovered it is a difference in the base boards. The 2nd computer apparently has a thinner base board because it flexes and bends downward when I put pressure on it, even on the outer edges. In contrast, the 1st computer's keyboard doesn't bend AT ALL, even when I put pressure down the center, and provides a pleasing muted "thud" when I'm typing very fast and hitting the keys hard. Both keyboards are fast but the 1st keyboard is incredible and reminds me of the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad keyboards. I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
*** Just in case you're wondering, I'm going to keep my 1st computer. ***

Hey, there!
I liked reading your post...It's very nice to be able to observe 2 of the same (configured) lappy's side-by-side! I found it very informative, and you had great descriptions on all 7 points! I'm sure others will feel the same way!
Again, nice job!
Cin
P.S. I'm glad your keeping your first one! -
Wait, so you got a second one for free?
