Now the Sony is the new Centrino 2 and ATI card, but less screen resolution.

But it seems a great spec against the current dell. Is it worth me waiting to see if after 13th aug (the date of the latest offer expiry) if Dell update the 1530, or do I go for the cheaper Sony?

I wouldn't worry about the screen resolution on the Sony. It's a 16" screen with true 16:9 widescreen resolution of 1600x900. If you're going to use it mainly for multimedia and watching HD via its Blu-Ray drive then this is a good choice, although Windows real-estate will be slightly narrower than the traditional 16:10 resolutions.

I don't know how the ATI gpu compares with the Nvidia (recent gpu issues asides) in terms of gaming

Both are good units. Personally, I'm waiting a bit to see Dell's new stuff. Other promos will pop up again on the other two.

The Sony's hard drive is only 4200rpm. Might be a consideration if your loading a lot of files or playing downloaded video's.
