    Hi. Does anyone know if there is a way to disable automatic detection of the Headphone Jack on the XPS? I accidentally wrenched the headphones out of the jack after tripping on the wire and now my XPS thinks that headphones are permanently plugged in thus disabling the internal speakers. I read that amending ForcedisableJD in the registry from 00 to 01 or FF should work but in my case, it had the opposite effect and showed (non-existent) devices plugged into all three jacks. Any solutions would be gratefully received.

    There was a thread here a while back saying that it's possible to set the XPS not to disable the on-board speakers even when a plug is inserted in the audio output jack. IOW, you could have the on-board speakers and headphones working simultaneously. I don't recall if it was a BIOS setting or something in an audio control panel.

    Thanks for your reply Toronto though I don't think it helps in my case. The headphone jack is showing a device permanently plugged in as the sense pin is broken. If I insert a device, Realtek doesn't ask me what I've plugged in because as far as it's concerned, there is a device in there already. Amending the forcedisablejd keys in the registry should disable jack detection thus allowing both the headphones and speakers to work simultaneously but in my case, this is not happening.

    Another option for me would be to change the jack so it behaves as an input (like the mic jack) and not an output but I'm not sure if this is possible.

    Do you have a link to the entire post so I could follow it - I wasn't able to find it myself using the search option.

    Problem solved! I found a thread on a Win7 forum about reassignment of pin allocations for Realtek HD Audio cards. The pin numbers and registry keys provided weren't applicable to the XPS but by trial and error, I managed to find the relevant keys. The solution is this:

    Open regedit (and backup!). Then search for Pin04 (this appears to correspond to the left headphone jack). In this case, it first appears under

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Settings\Drv6312_DevType_0665_SS102804b8

    Amend the current value to 01 (this apparently corresponds to Mic In) and search again for the same key until you have amended all instances. It will appear under CurrentControlSet and CurrentControlSet2 also.

    My speakers are now re-enabled though for some reason, the left headphone jack still operates as an output and not an input and Audio Manager still shows it as an output jack! I thought I might have to re-amend the registry if I wanted to use the mic built-in to the webcam but it still operates as normal.

    It took me a while to find it as it was. Anyway, that's really all there was that would be relevant to your issue. The earlier posts were about someone wanted recommendations for an external sub-woofer to plug in to the headphone jack.

    Hi Guys,

    I had the same problem. After 3 hrs of stuffing around it turned out to be the following:

    For Dell XPS 17 (XPS L702X) to disable Headphone jack (because it constantly detected headphones)

    IN Regedit

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Settings\Drv6449_DevType_0665_SS10280571

    change "Pin1b" from "02 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00" (this reassigns the port from headphones to line in)

    Restart and Viola! Sound works again!

    Did you disable the headphone jack detection because the jack wasn't working properly, or because it would falsely detect an inserted plug when nothing was inserted?

    If you plug headphones or other device into the audio-out jack now, does sound play simultaneously on both the headphones and the laptop's on-board speakers?

    Thanks Alex

    Looks like my Dell L702X suffered the same fate (don't know if it's a coincidence or not - but I plugged in pair of Samsung hands-free headphones in the jack around the time the Audio stopped being detected - these are the ones with a Mic and a set of buttons for volume and audio select - 4 contact jack - this SHOULDN'T break things but *shrugs*.)

    Just for the record - the problem is that the Jack now constantly shows a pair of headphones inserted - i.e. sense stopped working. Using the standard Microsoft HD Audio drivers changed nothing. I didn't experiment too much with the High Definition Audio Utility to reconfigure Pins (which seemed too complicated, and only works with MS Standard Driver).

    If you were playing continual sound - and used the Realtek utility to reconfigure the jack from Headphone to Front Speaker you can hear a blip of the original audio playing back while switching occurs. Then the drivers switch back to Headphone mode ... disabling the sound entirely.

    Alex Sutcliffe's method reconfigures the Jack to show up as a Line Input.

    It's a bit of a shame that disabling Jack Detection doesn't work! I'd love to be able to force the jacks to do EXACTLY what I want, when I want it!

    Now I get Audio played through the laptop speakers. Audio does not play through the Jack at the same time. Inserting a pair of Headphones into the Jack causes it to switch back into Headphone mode all over again unless you disable Jack Auto Detection. If you disable Jack Auto Detection you can select "Headphones" or "Laptop Speakers" in the Realtek Audi app to switch the jack back to Headphone mode. To switch back to the laptop speakers requires changing the registry and restarting all over again. It's a nuisance, it's disappointing and annoying - but at least it's not an out of warranty RMA.

    I'll try changing the values of the Jack, perhaps another number instead of 2 gives dual output?

    Either way - using Alex's values if you paste the following lines in a .reg file you can just double click and it'll import it all for you.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0007\Settings]
    "ForceDisableJD"=hex:01

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0007\Settings\Drv7083_DevType_0665_SS102804b8]
    "Pin1b"=hex:00,00,00,00
