Does anyone know how to disable the infrared sensor on an XPS 1645?

I ask as I often use the laptop while also watching a media pc and the remote control operates both the laptop as well as the media pc and it's damned annoying.

All of the items referring to the infrared receiver in the device manager can't be disabled so other than sticking a piece of tape over the sensor does anyone have any ideas?

While I could just uninstall the driver it's not the most elegant solution and makes it a pain when I do want to use the port.

I believe you could just disable it like any other devices. Go to Device Manager and disable it.

Anyway, is there a infrared sensor in 1640 ?

The disable option is greyed out so you can't disable it.

As for the sensor itself on the 1645 it is on the front edge of the laptop about 2 inches from the right hand side.

Go into the BIOS. IIRC, there is an option to disable it there?

I looked in the bios and couldn't see an option to disable it. There were options for everything else. I'll take another look later on to make sure I didn't miss it.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I do see a small square box at the front edge of my laptop. But I'm not sure whether it has the receiver in it. Do we have to add it in additionally ? Apparently I did not choose the Dell Remote thingy during the customization of this laptop...

    That's definitely the receiver.

I want to say I read somewhere that the receiver only works with the Dell Media Remote? Anyone know different, i.e. have an infrared device to test with?

You're right that it is definitely the infrared receiver and I assume it's fitted to all machines as standard.

As for remotes the standard Microsoft media centre remote works perfectly as I've discovered. The only problem is I don't want it to )
