    Do all XPS M1330s Overheat?

I Guess I've had a bit of bad luck with my new M1330 so now I've got 2 options: Get a refund or have it replaced.

    Spec: T7500, 2GB DDR2, 8400 GS, 160 GB HDD, WLED Screen.

Originally my XPS couldn't access its L2 cache and consequently ran painfully slow. Dell sent a technician who replaced the mainboard, CPU, and RAM. That fixed the original fault but now I've got an overheating problem.

When the laptop was in pieces I noticed the CPU GPU (8400 GS) and Chipset share a single heat pipe and thought that was lot of heat for one pipe and a tiny fan, looks like I was right.

Anyway I keep getting various application errors and blue screens. It runs for just minutes under stress and even older games are unplayable (before it locks up.)

I tried updating drivers / fresh vista install / even installed XP but no joy.

Under stress the CPU temps jump quickly to ~ 84 degrees C and it throttles down to its lowest setting. The GPU jumps even quicker to 105 degrees C. Strangely the fan doesn’t often reach full speed?

I'd really appreciate it if any M1330 owners would let me know if they have problems with overheating / throttling. If I get a replacement from dell and that throttles down under load I don't think it would be much use for gaming so I may as well get a refund?

Yes. My M1330 initially had CPU whining and then later started overheating to such an extent that it could burn my skin. Dell has just got my notebook back. Awaiting for a refund!

Yes that cpu whine sounds familiar. Since the component change it whines so loud my dog gets scared as it boots up.

If you're M1330 is not overheating download the intel TAP program and see if the processor is throttling. Mine was throttling constantly on the AC adapter and as a result it didn't overheat but my 2.2Ghz processor would only run at 1.6Ghz when both cores were fully loaded.

I have been rocking COD4 on my 1330 and, funny as it may seem, it runs cooler than my M1710....

If you place it on the bed or sofa, it will run hotter than on the flat surface.

Bottom vent is there for a reason.

I usually put a cigarrette box on the bottom of it if I use it on a sofa, or bed, then it doesn't run hot as much.

You can monitor your system's temp using I8kfan, and I posted how to make it work properly on M1330.

    Give it a try.

Wait, so a tech came and ripped it apart, fixed the problems put it back together and now it overheats?

Obviously ding bad tech dude didn't put it back together properly, or didn't reply thermal compound. Possibly didn't connect the fan!

Common think about it, no over heat, numb nuts tech rips it apart, then later it over heats..

yup, sounds like th most reasonable explination!

Prob didn't put any thermal paste on it! I would have demanded to see him apply some decent thermal paste (arctic silver 5)!

And if he refuse, I'd have kicked him out and been on the phone with DELL to tell them how daft it is to remove the heatsink, and not re-apply thermal paste afterwards!

This thread reminds me of the XBOX 360 3RL (overheating) issue all over again!

Jeez guys, it's powerful package in a slim note book. It's very normal to get warm. Just monitor temp using I8kfan. Your 49/52 is very normal.

Mine does get warm but come no where near overheating.

While this is just statiing the obvious, notebook's cooling vent intake is on the bottom, make sure its not restricted. If your unit is overheating, then its a problem with that perticular unit, not all M1330s overheat.

My M1330 with the 9 cell keeps itself quite cool since it's elevated about 1/2 inch off the surface.

I have come across many notebooks that run much hotter, one of the worst offenders being the first gen Acer Ferrari.

Sounds the same as me. I did all the above and am now on my second mother board. This fixed the original problems, but it is now running painfully slow and running at 76 C (yes, centigrade). Not at stress. Just idling...

How did you detect it couldn't access the L2 cache?

I have a problem with the same computer. It does not really overheat but if I play a game (Settlers VI) after few minuter the ventilator will make a lot of noise and then the comp will just show my black screen, there is nothing else to do than torn it off. The same game runs perfectly on the similar other computer.
Any idea what might be wrong? Is is overheating maybe!? ..though the comp is not hot.

No not all over heat. Make sure the fan is not obstructed. If yours over hearts then I would suggest calling dell support and get it fixed.

If you order today I doubt it. These things have been addressed by dell. Though there is always a chance to get a lemon but they always have warranties.

I ordered mine a week or two ago and mine doesn't feel overly hot to the touch when just surfing (not gamed yet), but it does get fairly warm after using for a few hours, mainly under the HDD (the battery does warm up when running on external power too).

Just bumping this thread...now that nVIDIA overheat is a known issue, how many of the original posters in this thread actually got fried GPUs/Mobo's?
