First of all you were lucky (trust me). Secondly why would you have to send the 32bit DVD back? That makes no sense at all.

I'm pretty sure that even if you have to send the 32bit DVD back you can simply call them up and request a new 32bit disc. I got full new set of discs for my XPS M1210 last year just before my warranty ran out. I think there's a policy somewhere that says you are entitled to one new set of discs for free during your warranty period.

I got my XPS M1330 with 32bit Vista Home Premium....tried contacting Dell for 64bit Home Premium...but they say only Business / Ultimate version is available for 64bit.....

Does anyone succeeded in getting 64bit Home Premium? If yes, can you please post the Dell part number for it.

    Cheers!!!!

Home Premium users are not entitled to the disc. However, you can still use the 32-bit Home Premium key with a 64-bit disc if you obtain the disc from elsewhere (use your imagination).

Great work guys and gals :)

I'l have to try this soon, however i'l need to buy 4gb RAM first to make it viable. Has anyone thats suceeded done it in the UK? Or are you just Americans that have blagged a disc :) Also I have Product RED Ultimate SP1 , If I requested 64 bit do you reckon they would still gimme a disc with RED?

    Thanks

u can use 64bit with 3GB ram... its just that most people with 4GB ram go to 64bit to use that last .5GB ram......

Product RED is a scam IMO... just some red wallpaper and background that u can get from the dell site....

not sure about what the policy is in UK...

I see why your saying Product RED is a scam, Price wise yes, No I didn't fall for it I actually originally had my m1330 with Vista premium and normal red back before product RED was avalalible, However Dell upgraded my replacement laptop to Ultimate RED so :)

Not sure why they want the 32-bit DVD back...don't have a problem sending it back though since I already made a nero image of it...

    http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/1/281532/ShowThread.aspx

When I install 64-bit Ultimate, I'll also have to get that latest version of Media Center Fiji linked above installed at the same time. Figures that Microsoft would make it difficult so that you can only install this update during a Vista SP1 clean install...sigh

i spent an hour and thirteen minutes on the phone with them, but got it done....the rep first made sure that the drivers were available......then he said that i was ineligible for the upgrade....thus i kept on referring to the dsn policy.....next he had to talk to his supervisor....when he got back on the phone he said that business users of vista only receive the free dvd and not ultimate users....once again i referred back to the policy.....afterwards he said that vista will not be compatible with my m1330 system because he did “special dell system tests based upon my system components”.....i then said what is the problem?....what is lacking in my m1330?...the cpu?...the graphics card?....finally he gave in and decided to send me the free dvd.....he really did not want to send me the free dvd......why did he check the availability of drivers for 64 bit first and then after say i am not eligible for the free dvd offer when i clearly stated in the beginning of the phone call about the dsn policy....it was funny because he asked me in the middle of the phone call, do i know somebody who works for dell.....lol.....in addition i asked him if he ever dealt with this type of situation before and he only said one time.....throughout the whole call he was warning me about how 64 bit is incompatible, thus advising me to stay with 32 bit…..all this for something free

It's really weird; I just phoned and there was no problem with service rep, he said it was fine to get the 64 bit. I am in Canada and have Vista Premium and am a home user, not a corporate customer but he did not even blink. However, it is out of stock, apparently. Hummm..... I hope this is not a stalling tactic that they are using to make me forget about the whole idea. I am still just not understanding why there was no problem in getting the disk (except for the out of stock issue) but I am glad I did not have to fight. Fingers crossed, he said it should be in stock in a week.

    Wow, that was tedious...

I just got off the phone with Dell TS, after close to an hour. The technician was very polite and helpful, but it took forever for him to get "authorization". They also asked for a complete listing of all the CDs I did receive for some reason... But luckily I had them all sitting right here.

The bottom line is that they apparently had trouble locating any 64bit CD for the 1530, but after referencing the DSN reference posted earlier ( THANKS!), they were able to find a CD available by looking under the 1730's material.

Yasdaz: If you run into any issues a week from now, you might want to ask them to check stock for the 1730 as well (same CD).

    Yay!

Thats the US part# for the Vista Ultimate 64-bit DVD...not sure why they would call it a CD. ;)

Who did manage on the forum? Still my question is valid: can you install Home Premium or Business using an Ultimate disc?

Post edit: nevermind after googling it I found that

So I only need any 64-bit disk (any disc).

I am getting a new HDD next week. The current drive in my system died.
I talked to dell about the 64 bit vista dvd and I was told that this dsn is only for business users.
I am unable to understand why dell has such moronic policies.
Can someone point me to some place where I can download a clean copy of Vista x64.
Or maybe someone could pls ship me a copy of the installation DVD.
I will pay the shipping charges by paypal.

    Thanks :)

does dell ship 64bit vista in the uk at all?

also, if you order the 32 bit, does dell have the 64 bit installed on the disc already? as i know the product key of the 32bit will work if you use it to install 64 bit version.

would you have to download a 64bit version off torr..... sites and use the product key dell gave you for 32bit to install it?

The real question is if you get the correct version of the OS from the torrents. Some of these have infiltrated backdoors and trojans ... I'm with akg on this one: if anyone can help us with a copy of the disc I can pay the shipping (media mail should be around 2$) through paypal.

Just an update. I phoned today and finally got a 64 bit Vista premium disc sent out day (not counting chickens until they actually arrive, lol). Quite the story though. First the guy spent about 20 minutes (no kidding) trying to acertain if the 1330 could support 64 bit (keep in mind this is a tech support guy). I told him that the support website for the laptop had 64 bit drivers and directed him to the 64 bit 1330 driver support thread in this forum. He finally said that he saw that this laptop had a 64 bit processor and thus could take the os. At this point I don't know whether to laugh or cry. A tech person who had to look up the processor when it has been how long since we have had 64 bit processors (both intel and amd)? The mind boggles. Then he tried to sell it to me. I was polite but firm saying that I had not been told it would cost anything and that I had already paid for the os. He finally said he would ship it to me free. Long story short, in Canada you can get 64 bit os in any Vista flavour, it seems (hopefully it will arrive; have had things promised which did not end up being shipped out).

Hi all, I'm a long time fan of the site, but never felt like I needed to post. I sent out this letter to Dell based on an experience related to this thread. Thought those of you who had the same things happen might want to try it also. I apologize, it's a wall-o-text, but I feel well worded.

After 2 emails to CS and no dvd :( I rang instead. The CSR said that the DSN document was a Tech Services document and she could not read it.

So I got transferred to TS after I explained what I wanted he said that I got what I had ordered a x32 os.

I then set about quoting the DSN doc to him and after a couple more little chats and him actually reading the said document he is dispatching my dvd in the post :)

    Yippee x64 here I come.

I am in the UK fyi

    Hi All,

I am getting a call from the India Call Centre manager tomorrow with a call back about the upgrade to Vista 64 [This is Premium though, not Ultimate - sorry wrong thread but this was the most instructive].

I have just got my studio 17 Last week and haven't installed any programs on it as want to do clean install , but if can get 64 version then great.

I have a T8100 processor and 4 gb of ram so is a 64 supporting computer. I quoted the DSN document number at the call centre rep and she arranged the call-back for tomorrow, but now not sure of my position as i dont have vista business or Ultimate which I have read is what this DSN document applies to??

if anyone can enlighten me for tomorrow's showdown i would be most grateful.

p.s. I did have another query to the tech support as my palmrest keeps popping out! so she arranged for an engineer to come and replace it on friday so she was helpful and has reduced my problem number :)

well that was a big waste of time. |I was phoned back by the manager who had no idea what he was talking about and predictably [?] transferred me to the cust. services which wondered why he had passed me through to them. another callback was arranged, which wasn't honoured, then i tried live chat. they said it was customer care only, i was transferred to Shaun [Ireland] where on telling him about the DSN policy he went quiet then his strangley muffled accent informed me that "the line is really bad" , i said "call me back then", he repeated "the line is really bad", then cut me off the cheeky wart [this after being on the phone for 30 minutes! I was then passed through to other customer reps, finally back to Fiona [who put the sale through, thinking i would get some sense, unfortunately she informed me that I can't return something as 'insignificant' as a Bag [another issue I had with order] as it's too expensive to pick-up, so i have to keep it!! i got her to confirm, that to get a full refund i have to cancel the whole order, which is insane for a £20 bag. All this time the Vista 64 question was a case of referral to Technical services or Customer Care [whoever I was on the phone with it was the other Dept.] so i tried phoning again. this time it's after 5pm, phoned cutomer services was greeted by Mona on Helpdesk, who told me I was a business user, which i'm not, then refused to put me through to another dept. I said are you refusing to put me through, she said she was then put me through to the dept., she knew was closed! how annoying. No further with the Vista 64, but a simple request puts me in the frame of mind to cancel the whole order to get a full refund -- only thing stopping me is the lack of comparable machines on Outlet! Still hoping for Vista 64 though, wonder if their engineers have spares with them when they come to fix something...

    Hello,

Just to let you all know. I stumbled upon this thread yesterday after having thoughts about changing my M1530 to 64 bit Ultimate. After having a read through, I called the XPS Support and spoke to a rep. He did a few checks after I quoted the DSN document ID and then said he would send me a 64 bit DvD out, but warned me that DELL would no longer provide software support.

So just waiting to see how long it takes now, I will report back when it arrives. :)

Hello, I've lurked for a while and after the information I've learned here I thought I would contribute. I just got my xps 1330 with 4g and vista home premium 32bit installed. After reading here, I entered a chat session with dell tech support and within 5 minutes I have the 64bit dvd shipping to me within 1-2 business days. I had absolutely no problems, I just told him I had 4 g of ram and some 64 bit prog and he had no problems shipping me the 64 bit disc. Anyway, thanks to all of you for the great info. :)

PS: he said they would ship me the actual vista oem 64 bit disc.

I will update when I receive it this week, I have already received the email confirmation so everything looks good.
