Hello, I bought a Dell XPS 1530 back in summer '08, so I've had it for 2 years now. This machine seems to have an overheating issue and the GPU temperature usually raises to 95 degrees!

I'm looking at getting a new laptop and was wondering if the XPS 16 has the same issue? And are there any other known issues?

I believe it differs between users. I have the studio xps 16 with i5, 5730 and 130w adapter and the max temp I have ever gotten was 68C. Games I have played on it are just SC2 and WoW though. If i played crysis, I'm pretty sure it would have gone higher.

hi, i have the SXPS 1640 and to be honest, I never experienced overheating when using this laptop, even when playing SC2 or MW2 for 2 hours, it does get hot, but I think all laptop will become hot under heavy load right?

and mine is with hd 4670, the one with hd 5730 should be cooler. :)

Hey, I went from the 1530 and received a XPS 1647 as a replacement due to all the problems I was having from the GPU fails over 1.5 years of ownership, etc.

I have had no heating issues with the XPS 1647 whatsoever. And, I do some very "light" gaming, but more multi-media :)

    My 1647: Intel CoreTM i5 520M processor, 4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm, 6 & 9 C batt, 16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, 8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive, 320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive, Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module, Intel 6200 Wireless-N, Win 7.

    Cin...

Even when running Furmark on 'extreme burn mode' my GPU doesn't go above 80c.

Interesting, thanks for the input guys.

I'm just a bit paranoid because there was a big fuss about the XPS 1530's GPU temperature, and I still bought it and received the high GPU temps lol.

I guess the new XPS is better?

LUCKY! I got the XPS 16 with the 5730 and on certain games like FFXIV and PSX emulator my cpu hits 84C. But other games like Mass Effect 2 it runs cool enough for my not to worry.

Yeah I ran furmark on extreme burning mode and prime 95 on whatever its extreme setting is and I never even hit near 80c. Mind you that is with a Zalmann NC2000. Without I hit I think 82c. But even thats pretty good. On the m1530 by comparison, I hit 95c... now that is HOT!

Yes it does. You need bios A09 because it doesnt have GPU temp limit..else it throttles at 84c. (which it will easily achieve..)

My XPS 1645 usually hits around 79C on the CPU and 89C for the GPU when gaming. I have the older 4670 card with the (older?) i7 720QM.

Mine used to overheat and throttle while playing games, until I removed the vent covers. Now it only throttles with Prime+Furmark (CPU temp 84C, GPU temp 95C+)

It's on the high side of normal, but nothing to worry about.
