In my eagerness to get a good deal, I picked up an XPS 1330 on Dell's outlet. Then I found this forum and discovered that the nVidia 8400M GS video card. I'd like to return the laptop.
I just got the email that my order was shipped. Can I just refuse delivery when it arrives or do I have to call someone in India and deal with all that? Any suggestions on how to return this efficiently and with the least amount of hassle?
TIA!!

Thanks for the advice!!
I really like the machine and was super thrilled with the deal I got. But I'm concerned about it dying on me, and I have to admit, all these posts about how horrible the nVidia issue is has me freaked out.
I will call Dell and find out more info about the extended warranty right away before the box arrives. It is being shipped 3-5 day standard shipping, so I have some time. Maybe I can ask for an extended full warranty in lieu of returning the machine *fingers crossed*.
I was really surprised to find out about this issue. I also purchased an even less expensive xps 1330 for my husband; only has the Intel integrated video card, but we love it. -
i think dell has a non-satisfaction return period. you could return it as soon as you receive it.

i was an early adopter of the m1330. i have never had any problems with it. i even occasionally game with it. you have to remember that only people that have problems post here, not as much as the ones that dont have problems.

If you receive the shipment/order, and then call for a Return Authorization number within 21 days, you will most likely be charged a 15% restocking fee.

The 15% restocking fee is typically waived if you order another Dell, or return the unit because it was defective. But requesting to return a system due to buyers remorse leaves you at the mercy of Dell. My guess they will charge you 15%.
Your best bet is to refuse the shipment. Dell can't/won't charge you a 15% restocking fee if you refuse the order. After you refuse the order, watch the UPS tracking system until the unit is received by Dell. This will take about 5-7 days. Once Dell has the unit, call Dell and request a full refund. It will probably take another week or so to get the credit posted to your account. -
DON'T REFUSE DELIVERY...
Accept delivery and then call to return if you choose within 21 days. If you refuse delivery, you may lose out on the computer and a refund per their policies (No CRA = no refund & no computer back to you).
"21-Day Return Period for Certain Hardware and Software Products and Accessories: Unless you have a separate agreement with Dell, or except as provided below, all hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts, and media-based software that is unopened and still in its sealed package or, if delivered electronically, that has not been downloaded, may be returned within 21 days from the date on the packing slip or invoice for a credit or a refund of the purchase price paid, less shipping and handling and any applicable restocking fees. Any product returned to Dell without prior authorization from Dell will be considered an unauthorized return, and the customer will not receive credit for the product and Dell will not ship the product back to you"
Call them though, they will offer you something to keep the system, but remember, if you choose to return it with no problems, they could charge you 15%. You may have to speak to 6 people, but keep trying. -
Not sure what the difference is between buying from a Dell Outlet and buying a new system from Dell over the internet, but the policy you quoted says
"Any product returned to Dell without prior authorization ..."
If you refuse an order than you never received the order.
If you never received an order than you can never RETURN an order.
Dell never delivered the product, so their is nothing to return.
The policy sentence refers to orders the customer received and signed for.
Refusing to receive an order is entirely different.
If Dell drags their feet giving you a refund for a refused order, then call your credit card company and file a complaint. Dell will not be able to produce any document that proved you received the computer. Without proof of delivery, then the credit card company can impose their legal power to charge back Dell and apply a credit to your credit card. -
Yeah, I did a little more research online, and there is certainly the chance I'll have problems, but there is a chance I won't. Just my luck, the shipment arrived. We're going to fire it up to see if there is a problem so we can hopefully waive the 15% restocking fee. With the extended warranty, it seems I'm covered, but i was just so surprised to see so many folks post about the problem with the nVidia chip.

just return it and youll be fine

I'm asking because I would like to hear some success stories. -
i have an 8400gs in it. i use it everyday. it pretty much has my life one it... its my main machine aside from my m1730(which is strictly just for gaming). i bought it right when it came out when everyone was afraid of getting a grainy screen and cpu whine, both of which i dont have. i have never had a problem with it. the only thing changed on it was the hard drive and that was just because i wanted a bigger one!! while i was on deployment this thing made time fly with games like world in conflict, spore, sim city 4, etc. overall i am very happy with this purchase but one thing i have to get is a black keyboard because that looks bad ***

I think you're freaking out a little if you changed your mind PURELY because of the 8400m. At least give the system some time to grow on you.
Don't want the XPS 1330 I bought
