I have searched the forum for options on dual booting my xps 1330 with either linux or XP however I cannot seem to find what I am looking for.

Basically, i already have vista installed and I do not want to format that hard drive to install either xp or linux. I am fully aware of the fact that If i install XP after vista it will mess up my boot record. Is there any way around this?

    Thanks

I don't quite understand the question here... if you want to dual-boot XP and a *Nix, why are you concerned about messing up your Vista installation? Dual-booting XP and a *Nix and keeping Vista around are mutually exclusive, no?

    insert windows installation here>

    linux installation>
you can choose to install GRUB (or equi) only on the linux partiton... that way, u use XP(or Vista) bootloader to load any partition(windows = good, linux... XP/vista bootloader will load grub)

    I've never seen that happen.

As a general rule of thumb, install Windows first, and then Linux. Windows doesn't like to recognize other OSes in its bootloader.
