Is it possible to have two external displays coming off the laptop? One hooked up to the hdmi port, and another hooked up to the mini display port?

Yes. You can actually do three displays at once: mini display port + built-in LCD + HDMI.

I am still unable to get Windows to control the multiple displays properly, but it work just fine through the nVidia Control Panel.

Haha sweet. I'm thinking of picking up a 27" 2560x1440 screen to go along with my 24" 1920x1200 monitor I'm currently using. Would work wonders for multitasking having 3 screens haha

IF we are talking the current-gen XPS l502x, l702x, etc, then yes. The reason is that the HDMI port is hardwired to the NVidia card while the Display Port is tied to the Intel graphics. Pretty nice honestly.

While this is true, it's also misleading due to being too vague.

Yes,. the mini Display Port is attached to the Intel iGPU, but it is not exclusively using it. You can also output using the nVidia GPU over the mDP. Almost all literature and user posts about the L502x simply says that the mDP uses the Intel iGPU. It wasn't until a kindly user helped test for me that the nVidia GPU CAN output over the mDP as well.

Interesting, hadn't heard that. Good to know, as I have been considering picking up one of the Korean 27" IPS panels from Microcenter (same panel as used in Dell 27" and the Apple Cinema, but under 1/2 the price ;) ) and would use display port ideally. Wouldn't be an issue for desktop stuff, but if I wanted to game or use my CAD programs (primary point to be using the laptop anyway since the license got tied to it and not my desktop...) would be nice to have the extra grunt of the 555m.

Which is why I'm shouting from the rooftops (well, not really) that you can use the mDP for gaming as well

So the mDP is wired to the Intel card much the same way the internal screen is, meaning Optimus is in effect. Got it. Funny how I was even posting in those threads...*facepalm* @ forgetfulness.

OT, but at least you were involved. I completely missed those threads when I was searching for just that information.
