I had Dell inspiron 10 in 2006 till 2008 and my friends would treat my Dell laptop as a ticking timebomb and wish that it would burst up in flames during a lecture. Fun times! It never did though.

this really tops everything. :) i used to do a personal guessing game whenever i visit electronic stores and try to guess which ones from their display units are dell by touching the laptop palm rest. If its warm, its dell.. :) always get it right...

hehe yeah, i remember my math teacher ( who was a mac freak ) would take cover behind his desk when i took out my m1530, i would just laugh and say " do i smell smoke ??" he would stare and say " damn terrorist, put that bomb away.. "

fortunately, the battery thing was long ago, so i was sure my m1530 wouldn't catch on flames :D

And the battery catching fire is Dell's fault how? Why not try googling batteries catching fire and see what you come up with.

Fujitsu, Sony, Dell, HP, Packard Bell, Toshiba and the like have all issued recalls over fire risks of batteries previously. Funny how many of your posts keep repeating how terrible Dell and HP are.

I'm calling B.S on this one.

Ok ... If a Dell laptop catches fire will you call the battery manufacturer or Dell ? Come on ... Above all its Dell laptop and you are paying to Dell.

Similarly if the battery performs well and gives power upto 10hrs , to whom you give the credit :D

You have been posting for months hemming and hawing about buying a laptop and on an endless search for the best bargain price on a Dell and yet constantly nit picking every issue. Are you ever going to actually buy something?

@ Viper, i've been looking since 2008 and have serious doubts to find anything in 2010. Maybe I'll get one when they will bring the next core i7 quad cores in 2011 which will use that smaller nano thing technology which will hopefully generate less heat.

Edit: The only postiive aspect is that my laptop budget is growing ( 2300 euros atm).

    Good question, I appreciate :p
Yes, I was targeting BlackFriday/Xmas deals but then heard about CES 2010 and problems of models which I were banking upon.

I'm not in a hurry to buy one as my 4+yr PC is still obedient to me till date. Hence its worth for me to wait and get a best deal to make worth of every $ :D lets hope we can see better fire proof (Dell) laptops @ CES

Oh, please, do keep waiting. I hear that CES 2011 is coming in 2011 too.

You would look to Dell for fixing your computer, but if you had any mind of your own, you should be looking at the battery manufacturer at fault, since laptops of other brands had the same problems. If the laptop catches fire due to the battery, and the laptop manufacturer does not help you out, then please feel free to fault them. If this issue was exclusive to Dell, by all means, fault them. This is not an issue exclusive to Dell. Would you like to post those links in the other forums? Your example is flawed. An extensive battery life can be attributed to the batteries, however, it is the energy consumption of the laptop, and thus the purview of the laptop manufacturer, that usually gives it extensive life, since we don't have any "super" batteries available to consumers. If a company is able to come up with laptop batteries of a decent size that give the Sager NP8690 5 hours of battery life, tell me, I'd be glad to thank them.

Here you go. Thinkpad, Toshiba, and HP.

    Run along now, troll.

True, you call Dell, but your original post says "Dell engineers designing". Sony batteries are designed by Sony, not Dell, or they would be called Dell batteries.

Or you could always keep waiting and better things will always come out. I bet in 2028 they will have 64 cores that generate less heat than a Core 2 Duo P-series. And they will all have HT support, thus giving you 128 cores to the OS.

I'm not saying to wait for next a decade to buy a laptop, said abt CES 2010 as its round the corner. And about posting in this section as the recent/original news for Dell laptop, I posted here. If its a mistake I'm sorry.

Anyway no more flames ... I can understand your love to Dell (either I'm not a Dell hater, but truth always truth, may it be bitter or sweet)

    Funny.

I'm not a Dell/HP/Clevo/Apple/blah/blah/blah lover incidentally. Although I must admit I love Dell's warranties. Machines wise, meh, I could take them or leave them, I've owned a gamut of machines ranging from Asus to Clevo to Toshiba, including Dell. Two Dells actually, both of which gave me no trouble, and never caught fire, one after 5 years of use. ;)

I've owned a Asus N80vn, Clevo D901C, Dell D630, I8600, Fujitsu T42220, Gateway P-6860FX, HP 8530p, 8730w, Toshiba M400 (2 of them) in within the last year. Might have missed a model or two, but you get the idea. I go with what I like and what fits me. Warranty is a big thing for me, so Asus, Dell (Complete Care is amazing) and HP (business line) are particularly attractive.

My point was that your original post was not particularly accurate. As fred2028 mentioned, blame Sony for the batteries, not Dell. From the article, Engagdet itself emphasized that it was the battery, and not Dell, that was the issue.

Note, batteries, not Dell laptops or Dell batteries.

Be the truth bitter or sweet, there is little of that in your original post aside from the fact that yes, it was a Dell that caught fire. Was it the fault of Dell's engineers? No. By all means, go post the other links I provided you in the HP/Lenovo/Toshiba forums. After all, those owners should know about such news too. Here's one for the Samsung forums.

Regarding waiting, just remember that while new tech is released or announced at CES, it can often take months for it to actually arrive in the hands of consumers.
