There is a saying that "they don't make things like they used to..."

My girlfriend recently threw my M1710 whilst in its rucksack down a flight of stairs. Seeing that there were several nasty bounces I thought that the laptop must have multiple organ failure .

However, when I ran diagnostics everything was found to be A-OK. I was worried about the LCD and HDD but it seems that the strike zone or something did a great job.

There is also no exterior damage or dents either. It must have been the padded bag or just luck.

I wanted to know what are other peoples experiences that demonstrate the ability of the XPS range to cope in similar situations. Is the new M1730 built to accommodate such feminine forces? ;)

While walking over to a printer in a design studio carrying my opened up m1710, I fell over (polished floor + lame grip on shoes) with the laptop flying from my hands.
It landed with a horrible crashing sound and I feared for the worst. After 15 mins of going over it I came to the conclusion that all that had happened was a faint scuff in the corner and there were no hardware problems.

My m1730 survived someone pushing it off a desk about 1.5m high in a thin case!

I would hate to know what sparked your gf to do such deeds. :p

My M1710 has had its fair bit of abuse and travel at this point with out any issue. I am a Field Service Engineer for a company and it goes with me every where I go. Home, Work, On Site. It has a few good scratches and even a few good DENTS, but no issues. My M1210 on the other hand has never faired well with much... and because of it, it spends most of its days in my bedroom. I carry them in a SLAPPA backpack.

All of the Dell laptops I have owned have faird well with abuse. I had an Inspiron that flew off the roof of my jeep unbagged and broke into many pieces, I re-asembled it and used it for another 9 months until i bought the m1710. I still have it and use it as a loaner machine/spare laptop. It works great, its just a bit slow compared to the Core2Duo CPU's being used today.

I have two Dell latitude C810's and they are both running fine. Use them mainly for internet browsing.

Fell off my bike with the laptop in my back pack. Checked the laptop and fully working no problems. I was worried since the C810 always had some play on the plastic lid (it can touch back of the LCD).

No hardware failures - ever, UXGA screens were perfect and still are. I've never needed to call support for these machines for the past 7-8 years.

However, my Dell XPS M170\M1710 are a special case...
