I'm getting tired of this black speck in the screen of my XPS 16 that's underneath the glossy plastic front of the screen. It's a pretty large speck of dust that's a few pixels in diameter on the lower left of my screen.

I have a two year warranty so I think this is still covered but I do have the rare RGB screen that was the cause of so many problems when I originally ordered it early last year. If I call in for service now, will I end up losing my RGB screen in a replacement? Or should I just live with the dust underneath my screen?

Why don't you ask Dell? Surely they can tell you what they'll be replacing it with?

They will replace the screen no problem. Flat out tell them that this is basiclly a dead pixel. I have had my screen replaced 5 times do to the same issue. My latest display has been great

Thanks for the replies. Since you've had success with it several times, I guess this should mean that they still stock the 16" RGB screen for replacements.

I've had the RGBLED screen on my Dell Studio XPS 1647 replaced a couple times due to the same issue (dust under the screen). Dell says that the replacement will be a refurbished screen, but it will pretty much look like a new screen. Occasionally, you might find some cosmetic blemishes on the outer shell of the screen.

What kind of cosmetic blemishes? Scratches on the lid or something?

Well for reference purposes, I asked Dell to replace the screen and after a quick half hour chat, they went ahead and put me in for one. Tech came today and swapped my screen for a refurb unit. I'm surprised it took under 20 hours from the time I reported the problem to resolution...not bad at all!

Screen has no dead pixel issues or any other display related issues but there are some minor cosmetic blemishes on the hinge area. Looks like tiny chips, possibly from the original repair of the screen. Another oddity is that the screen seems slightly larger than my old one since I can feel the display jut out from the sides of the laptop when closed. Not a huge issue but just something different.

Sorry to rehash a dead thread, but you guys are too damn nice. After the sixth screen on my XPS for dust in the screen or dead pixels. (7 days left on 2 year warranty) , I had it out with everyone Dell would put on the phone with me. The neighbors heard me screaming, after a few calls and a few promises off litigation, they sent out the 702x in my sig.

Nice one, hope it is better than the other one.
I had some problems with my 1647 too since i got it, mainly freezes & locks up . I reported this issue time ago, they tried to fixed through the phone...Anyway, I called them last week in regard with the same problem, they wanted to send it to their workshop for diagnosis, i did not want, I told them that I have warranty next business day and i want to be fixed home. he said, OK, I will call you in 10 minutes but it took two days to call me.
Meanwhile I filled an online complaint to Dell Head Office, gave the all the details I had...after a few days I have got a call from UK, the same guys i spoke before, asking more details about the problem....even between the battery and the bottom side of the LCD it was a friction resulted in a big enough mark of both, the battery and LCD.
Next day a technician came and replaced: heatsink, fan, LCD (was faulty that one too, and he got other one after two days), chassis, back cover and got a new battery (I did not ask for it), I still have the old battery too, 9 cell.
I am more worried about locks up/sound that it happens time to time.
Today i got a call being asked if I am pleased with it & the manager said, if i will have the slightest issue with it to call them.
In May my two year warranty is up, so all the parts that have been replaced have from 12 months warranty from now, they said.
..Is not that bad Dell when ends nice :)
