To enable it, install the latest driver (177.xx) from here - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=94
download and install the PhysX 8.07.18 software from - http://rapidshare.com/files/135001941/PhysX_8.07.18_SystemSoftwe.exe.html
If u succeeded, u should be able to enable GeForce PhysX under the PhysX properties and run the demo successfully.

Its nice, but its not all that great as it does decrease the performance of your graphics card. nVidia states you need at least one extra card dedicated to the physics processing alone, so that working in tandem with the primary vidcard that is doing all the 3D visuals work should not affect the primary vidcards performance at all.
If you really want PhysX just to have it, go for it, though just keep that in mind. -
I have not read what PhysX is or does yet, but if it calculates physical equations, does it not make sense to let the CPU handle it?
Or is it because it's better to have it done by GPU to eliminate the time it would otherwise need to pass the results from CPU to GPU? -
GPU is better in handling it since it is what does all the graphics and processing for the physics. The 8600GT is well over the requirements of the Aegia Physx card requirements, though it will still suffer from slight performance decrease which is why it is recommended if you want to use PhysX, you have two cards in SLI or in Crossfire Mode so that there is no performance decrease.
-
That's some interesting conjecture, Forte.
Up until now I'd always assumed that this 'PhysX' lark could only be entirely beneficial for everyone. On what you state here however, it's really only of any real significance to premium gaming machines where grunt and graphics cards/cores are both in abundance. -
I just installed the Physx drivers, and the Nvidia driver for Vista x64 like above. In CS:S i get an extra 5FPS which i think is from the nvidia driver. The Physx part has no difference what so ever due to what Forte is saying...
-
The amount of performance decrease is dependent on whether or not and how much PhysX is actually utilized in game. Games like CS:S do not have any PhysX, so obviously you wouldn't have any performance decrease.
Though if you were playing a game that does utilize PhysX such as UT3, you will take a hit on performance since the lone 8600GT is used for both graphics and physx processing.Though if you play UT3 without PhysX enabled, you get much higher framerates and much better performance.
They have done tests with PhysX before with it working on the same card that performs the graphics rendering for Unreal Tournament 3, it cut the performance of the card by 1/4th.
Enabling PhysX to play non-PhysX utlilized games at standard performance, and playing games that support PhysX at much lower performance depending on how much PhysX... is not worth it when you can play the same guy at much better performance without PhysX.
The extra 5FPS is from your driver and has nothing to do with PhysX whatsoever. -
Why doesnt it work with the 8700GT cards? At least I dont see them listed.
-
Still wondering why the 8700GT is not listed! Can anyone shed some light on this?
-
lol. Don't you hate it when you've posted over 12 hours ago and no one has responded yet? XD
I can do more than just shed "some" light like I always have.
As of today, Nvidia has officially acquired Aegia, so all Nvidia 8 series and 9 series cards all support PhysX now. Just download the following forceware drivers located here, it even includes some games (demos) you can try out that use Physx!
http://www.nvidia.com/content/forcewithin/us/download.asp
The v177.83 driver supports PhysX and is compatible with all 8 series and 9 series cards. There you go. Remember, if you only have a single GPU... its not going to perform all that well. You won't take a performance hit unless you have SLI, or just a very very powerful card.
For those who are desperate to get PhysX enabled, use the link in my post and not the links that the OP have posted. You want the real deal right? Thought so. -
Never mind. I got the drivers to install even tho the 8700 is not listed. Drivers seem to work fine. I do not have the ability to enable Nvidia Pysics, but the demos work.
-
You will want the official ones from the link to be safe and just so that its optimized the best. Theres a difference between working and actually performing very good.
-
It doesn't seem to be worth it.
-
There are couple of demos that just came out for Physx, if you don't know what it does, these are great demos to test out your NV GPU. Hopefully these features will be included in the upcoming games next year.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/forcewithin/us/download.asp -
What performance do you get on NVidia's demos, while PhysX's enabled? On my m1530 I get less than 10 fps on most demos. Also some demos (and also Mirror's Edge) keep telling me that I don't have PhX GPU acceleration installed, while in Control Panel the GeForce PhysX optioion is checked( some demos ex. The Fluids run in HW mode but the performance is not very good about 5-6fps). The extra performance is visible in some demos (CPU gives 1-2 fps, and GPU about 10), but i expected sth more. I have 179.28 laptop drivers and latest PhysX System Software isntalled.

Hi,
Even though you call the title of the forum "Enabling PhysX for our 8600m GT", this driver actually doesn't support 8600m gt. If you open the folder for this downloaded driver, and open the Text Document file: "modes", you can clearly see that in the list of the graphic cards that this driver supports, 8600m gt is not one of them.
I'm sorry to tell you that the title of this forum is pretty misleading, since it's the only one of all the nvidia graphic cards, this driver does not support!
I've spent pretty much time at trying to find the problem in installing this, on my 8600m gt graphic card but then i figure out that it doesn't really fit. -
If you use Fortes direct link to Nvidias own drivers they work fine and have PhysX.
-
If you use evilhomura89 links, you won't find the driver for 8600m GT card. You have to download the 185.20 version before it fits, cause the newer drivers aren't released for the 8600m gt card. Sure it fits for 8600 GT, but not the one with "M".
I'm just telling this to prevent further problems for other people, trying to download this driver for their 8600m GT videocard.
For people downloading this driver for the 8600m gt card: "DONT WASTE YOUR TIME"
(I am one of the owners, and this confused me quite a bunch)
