I'm 40 year old life long Dell user of desktops, laptops, netbooks etc... I've never really had any issues outside the norm with their products, but here is the deal.

Is there any reason I should not give in and buy one of the HP 17" Envy over the current Dell XPS 16 or anything they may come out with in a new improved XPS 16?

I hate to switch as I have been very loyal. It almost feels as though I'm cheating on my spouse

I guess I'm looking for good reasons to stay faithful to Dell and figured I could get some dirt on the negatives of the new 17" envy if anyone has some, ie: heat, trackpad, no RGB screen, keyboard bad ...

My problem is that I am sick of waiting for something new from Dell, and I've been waiting since February for them to refresh the XPS with something in the 5xxx line of GPU's. The problem though is that I do not need anything immediate, I can wait, but I've been waiting.

So what can someone tell me bad about the Envy 17 and give me a reason not to get one? Can a new XPS 16 possibly top the Envy in specs?

I think one way to look at it is this.... if you are an avid user of your computer, chances are you have another one you can use in the event something happened.

I think everyone here will agree that Dell, though a pain in the butt sometimes, is pretty damn good at customer satisfaction... especially if there is a real problem. I have never really had troubles with them as far as customer service requests go...

But hey, I do see that HP has some deals going on, I am sure they aren't bad either.

    Hope this helps.

Until this year, I was a 10 year Dell user. The small company I work for buys all of its computer equipment through Dell. When I gave up my Vostro 1500 in March I was going to get a small 13" I5/I7 with a decent GPU (HD 5650 or GT 330/335M). I actually bought a small notebook to hold me over. I'm still typing on it now. I have been waiting for the Acer 3820TG or the Dell Studio XPS 13, which was taken off the market months ago and is being redesigned. I am still waiting.

If nothing materializes by June 27th, I am buying the HP Envy 14. I too am tired of waiting. So, the simple answer to your quesiton is that the HP is a beautiful computer. I haven't priced it out, but I think I would choose it over the XPS 16. The XPS will not have a GPU anywhere as powerful as the Envy. Of course, price both out, but if its close, you could have the HP by June 1 or so. A bird in the hand.

Don't worry about cheating when your not getting what you need. :D

Really, Dell needs to step up its product develpoment. I would love to have an XPS 13 to buy.

What it really comes down to is: do you want to spend a little more (~$300 US) for a little more GPU performance from a bigger (and bulkier) laptop? This is before coupons and other discounts, matching it up with the base XPS i720QM.

I was having the same issue

Dell XPS 16, HP Envy 17 and Asus g73. I have made my choice with Asus, and I do not regret it one second.

Dell has the screen though and hp has the best design but asus has the best bang for the buck and the best cooling system.

I do think that depending on the type of laptops you need, you should pick the brand that gives you the most for your very specifci usage.
