Basically the hard drive (of my XPS m1530) has been going a bit slower than usual recently.

I figured it was just Vista been more sluggish than usual.
So I decided I'd back it up, wipe it and install my new copy of Windows 7 RTM.

After booting from the DVD, setup stopped halfway through giving me this '0x00000e9' error code.

I subsequently ran the dell diagnostics.
    Which gave me this :

    Hard Drive - DST
    Test Results : Fail
    Error code 2000-0142
Msg : hard drive 1 - Self test unsuccessful.
    Status : 70

    Anybody know what this means?
Is my hdd ruined :( or is there anything I can do to rectify it? :)

    Thanks.

If you are still under warranty contact Dell and they will dispatch out another hard drive. You'll return the orginal hard drive in the same box with a pre-printed shipping label.

If not, you can pick one up for under 100 USD.

Its a simple process to remove and replace the M1530 HDD. See this link for an overview...

He's right, it is time for a new hard drive. I had one fail with the same code and Dell had a new one here in a couple of days.
