mine also improved a lot
did anyone try this msconfig > boot > advanced > no of processor > 8 and max memory ?
i set it to use max memoery , any idea how much processor can be set ? -
I have set it to use max memory but it gave me a maximum of 8GB even though I have 16GB installed. However, I can make use of all 8 cpus.

I will try and post the results. -

I tried both,
1-Number of processors 8 + Use Max memory....I got 24 seconds boot time
2-Number of processors 8 Only.....Also i got 24 seconds boot time
But when i used max memory, the system info show that 2.9 of memory are usable, what does this mean?
thanks -

^^ weird.....

Any explanation?

I also told mine to boot with no gui in msconfig. Just doesn't show the windows logo at the beginning and takes a few seconds off the boot time. I haven't clocked my boot times, but it should be around 15 seconds or so.
-
Yes after the clean install my boot time was around 28-33 seconds.

Ugh, I migrated my Win7 install from my old XPS16 to this L702x. Right now I'm running on a Western Digital Black. Over 2 minutes to boot! Thankfully my 256GB Crucial m4 arrives tomorrow and I'll be doing a fresh install of Win7 SP1. Will report the results tomorrow evening

Thanks for sharing these info -

I am sure boot time will be around 15 seconds.Congratulations -

dont get me wrong , but apart from removing unnecessary items from MSCONFIG > starup , other tweaks either involve limiting the windows experience -

As visual effects? -

yup... exactly

You are right, visual effects important to me and to many users as well -

also in my prev laptop ( M1530 ) , I usually use the windows 7 (32 bit ) for average of 3-4 days without shuting it down , i do put it in sleep , but never ofter shuting it down .. thats how stable Windows 7 is ... so booting time is not a much importance for me atleast ..
thats why i comepletly fresh installed the OS , becoz i want to know what software is running behind , in factory installed OS , there are too many softwares and its very difficult to know which is runnign what ..
Now my system runs only
Intel graphics program
Nvidia graphics prgogram
Logitech setpoint for my logitech M505
KIS 2011
Realtek HD audio app
dell quickset ( mainly installed it to set the "always on" for backlit , or else i wouldnt have installed it..
thats it.. nothing else -

mine is 33 seconds from cold boot, past login, until all the icons in the system tray pops up.
using a 500gb 7200rpm HD....thinking about getting a SSD
-
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
Good time too -
Visual effects are also important to me ( see Smilies); that's why I have not messed with them.
I did try the Performance Troubleshooter after already using MSConfig and taking out alot of the items that load during startup and it did find some more that I did not need to load at startup.
Overall I'm happy with my non SSD style startup performance.
I won't come close to what owners of the SSD's are getting.
With both my HD's needing my passwords, Fast Access loading & "looking for a face", the little amount of items loading at startup and the Gadgets loading on the desktop, my system loads and is "ready" for use in about 50 seconds.
Perfectly fine for me!
P.S.
Sorry for the Smilies; I get carried away some times! Must cut back the coffee intake! -
Check out this website;
How to Speed Up Windows 7 Boot
From post # 18 of that website;
"Note that there is a checkbox enabling the drop-down: As such, if the checkbox is not checked, the system makes a decision as to how many cores to use. Dont be confused by the default value of 1″ in the dropdown box. This does not indicate the number used (whilst it the dropdown is disabled)."
Although some claim that they see improvements, my guess is that the quote above is accurate. -

boot racer measured 14 seconds total boot time
using Intel X25-M G2 80GB as boot drive -
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
Sure u love visual effects
-
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
But what if the system made a decision to use only 2 cores and i made it use 8 cores?...I think this will make the boot time a little bit faster.i tried it and it makes my boot time 24 instead of 28
.Not huge difference but it makes difference.

baaahhh. 26 seconds is ages..............i reboot on 7.3 seconds
-
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
Why don not you post a pic for this?
-
I have a 1st gen Kingston 64gb SSD (V100 Now) and booted 26 seconds. I know it's not the best SDD out there, but it was $1/GB and it was 'experimental' (just wanted to try an SSD).
I'm convinced, but will be sticking to 2 or 3 generations old on my upgrades. What I do doesn't require the current best, so I'll just go with cheap each time and be a bit behind the times
-
After a clean install the first month or so its fast but after you install lots of games and transfer all your music and files it bogs down . Sucks but thats just windows. This is on a mechanical hard drive of course.

My opinion, when you decide to buy a new hardware buy one of the best or wait till you be able to buy th best

You will love the new machine sooooo much.congratulations -

Any explanation for the memory usage in this picture? -
That's why I get all my programs installed, then go crazy in msconfig and keep all the programs and extra services from starting on bootup. I have over 70GB of programs, pretty much every microsoft and adobe program out there, including some vmware stuff and after a little tweaking my boot times are faster than ever. Just know what you're doing when you get into the advanced services part or you're programs won't start/run properly.
-
Honestly have no idea. Do you have 2x2GB or 1x4GB dimms? Swap dimms either way and see what happens. If that don't fix it, run memtest and see what it says.
-
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
I do the same -
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
No NO,it is a software related not hardware coz i only see it when i edit the boot option in MSCONFIG to use max memory but when i cancel this option, everthing become normal again but i only want to know the reason. -
Mine varies a little, but it's always between 20-22 seconds.
It should be less though, the same SSD in my i7 920 desktop was 17 seconds, so I'm a little disapointed. -
I just performed a clean install on my XPS L502X. before it was around 1 min and now after also it is around 1 min. any reasons why?
I did not remove the reserved drive partition which comes along with the laptop. -
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
May be you have many programs to load and 20 seconds is really Good. -
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
After some restarts,it will be faster and the copy of windows you use,i have the original dell copy is slow but after i modified it,added SP1 and added some tweaks.I have only 24 seconds boot time and my laptop ready to use
-
There are so many different components between your desktop and laptop, that the possibilities of why are endless. The i7 920 should still be a little faster at bootup as win 7 will use all 8 threads and the i7 920 has overall higher frequencies/cache available than the 2630QM. Plus the i7 920 doesn't have to use up resources for video output like the 2630QM does. I miss my 920 running @ 4.2GHz/core. That thing was a speed demon.
-
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
100% Right -
could you please elaborate on what kind of tweaks are you talking about. I have original dell reinstallation CD. I wil try to install the SP1 but if you can tell about the tweaks I can try those.
BTW I have exact same specs as yours except for RAM I have 6 gb and a 6-cell battery. -
nader_rizk2003 Notebook Evangelist
I did not mean ti install SP1 over windows,i slipstreamed SP1 into installation CD using RT seven lite and remove all unwanted components you dislike, for me (screen savers,gadgets,wallpapers....etc) it`s up to you and services as well.remove all things you dislike of windows.after clean install, install updated drivers then windows updates after this your programs and finally, disable all services and startup programs that you do not want to load from MSCONFIG.and for sure you will see a difference.
and Do not forget to adjust the visual style to have your system faster.
I use only these activated
Good luck
Excellent Boot Time after Clean Install,Share your`s.
