Hi guys!
Well its been a long time since i wrote a thread here, but i feel the recent events might come in handy for anyone going through the same situation.
in July of 2008 i bought my xps m1530, if anyone around here remembers, that's when new threads started opening up saying that the nvidia 8600 and 8400 were failing... But i just ignored it and paid for top shelf config, well...at the time at least( i sound like my grandfather lol ).
BIG mistake, i could tell you my whole story, but il sum it up so you guys get the idea.
I had 5 Motherboard Replacements, 6 Heatsink replacements, 3 Palmrest replacements, 1 screen top and antenna replacement ( to replace the antennas that the tech had broken... ) and a dvd drive replacement.
You could imagine the look on the tech's face when he came time after time, the last Motherboard replacement he said "sir... i have to apologize for the troubles this system has caused, this is just not normal... After I replace your motherboard, i really hope you don't have to call back again..."
And guess what? after working perfectly for 2 months, it started throttling again, this time i didn't even mind putting in AS5, i just cleaned up my fan, heatsink. Useless.
Quite frankly i was done. The m1530 is a GREAT laptop and its performance is brutal, but its just too powerful for its own good.
so i just wrote a really short mail to https://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/outstanding_issues_tech?c=us&l=en&s=gen
and explained the amount of replacements i had gone through. I didn't expect good results, because every time i had to contact dell to let them know my laptop was failing, i got hanged from dell rep to dell rep.
Surprise! a day later i get a mail saying they apologize for everything, and that they are sending me a new m1530... but it was clear to me that the m1530 was going to fail again, so they offered an sxps 1640, and i was more than happy to accept. I still pushed for some upgrades, even to an i7 platform, but didn't get it. But I didn't really care, i just wanted a computer that would perform at its full, and didn't need a cooler below it just to keep it from shutting down.
I just opened my dell account, and the new laptop is only a couple of hours shy from delivery!
This is my little story, so im saying goodbye to my m1530, and i really hope the sxps 16 doesn't fail as much as the m1530. So, happy ending.... or just the beginning of another mistake... i hope not![]()

You should've already gotten a replacement after the third attempt at fixing your issues. Good to see it's working out in th eend though, just a shame it took so long.

Sorry to hear about your M1530. Really hope the SXPS 1640 doesn't end up the same way~

If the same heat will continue with SXPS series, definitely the laptop will struggle to live live more than 2 years

Had my SXPS 1640 for 2 months ? So far so good
NO heating issue, I don't game =D

I am in a similar situation as the OP, but have not have as severe issues, mine mostly being with the spring loaded mechanism in the ExpressCard slot. Pushed for the ATI 4670, and the 16.0" RGBLED, but after reading about how oversaturated/grainy the 16" is, I called back and asked for the 15.6" 1080p WLED (hopefully an LG one). It's been a little over a week since I first called, and I haven't been issued an exchange #, but I am waiting on an email from a Dell advisor who hopefully can give me a more precise timeframe other than "7-21 days".

Congrats for the new laptop.

BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Just wante to say I also am getting a 1640 (at least i think I am, in exchange for the countless times Dell has replaced my mobo/heatsink/processor on my 1530.)

i have a happy exchange story to add, after numerous replacement service calls on my 1340 and even a unit replacement on my 1340 dell agreed to send me a 1640 with a rbgled screen, this laptop is amazing. dell customer service rocks. i no longer wish to buy a apple 15.4 because this 16" is a monsterrr i wish battery was better but i will take the trade off!
in all it took the tech 6 times of coming out and 1 exchange for my 1340 for them to switch to a brand new 1640 its great! -
Congrats on a new system
It is unfortunate your old system gave you so many problems and frustrations, but its a great reward for all the headache after all!

Had the SXPS with the 4670 since July 2009 and 0 heat issues because I'm not retarded and use it on a bed. Of course it may run more warmly than other laptops but there is no "issue" yet.
Now with an i7 1645 and still no issues. -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
I have a story to add I had originally purchased a Studio 1535 completely maxed out only to have recurrent problems with my touchpad(sensitive as a rock) and volume keys (constantly lighting up and not being able to be used) after several repairs and a system replacement. I was told I would be getting a new 1555 but 7 days later I received a refurbished SXPS 16 w/ a messed up keyboard and overheating problems and since my warranty transferred over I complained and they said they would take care of it. 30 days later i received a brand new SXPS 1640 with a 4670 256 GB SSD intel 5300 16" RGBLED and i couldnt be happier no problems at all since the replacement except for framerate dips which after a thermal paste change and an undervolt was fixed love this machine!
