Finally! After carpet bombing the executives at Dell within about 2 hours I received a reply from an assistant of Richard Tu, she was incredibly apologetic and informed me that she would find someone to help me as quickly as possible, so I received a call today and spoke to the representative on the phone and he informed me that he would go ahead and authorize an exchange, that was absolutely music to my ears as I have been trying for months to get an exchange after each repair happens. My tech also let me keep some desktop speakers that Dell sent accidentally that they didn't want me to have, so score!

My question is.........he mentioned on the phone that because my computer is over a year old that they would be unlikely to have the same configuration of the computer to send me and that I might end up with a newer model, how do these exchanges usually work? He also informed me that whatever computer model they sent me would be refurbished. He will be calling me tomorrow with the details, but for now maybe someone can answer some questions.

What computer would I end up with if they can't send me an M1530? My computer right now has a 250 gig HDD and 3 gigs of ram, I know for a fact that they don't have that configuration anymore, would this count as it not being able to be configured?

Also, do they expect you to send your HDD with the computer? If that's the case I guess I better start copying my data over.

    Thanks!

They'll send you an M1530 still, but they probably don't have any T7500s. You'll likely be getting a T8300 or T9300 instead. Everything else should be pretty much the same, only other concern I would have would be that they might not have the high res screen anymore either. I would ask for the details of the system you'll be getting.

They will ship you the new laptop first, so you can swap the drives if you'd like, or you can clone to the new drive. Then you put the old laptop in the box they shipped to you, you slap on a prepaid return label, and it's done.

How would I go about cloning my drive? Do they provide a means of doing this or do I need to find some 3rd party software to aid me in doing this?

He said he would call me tomorrow with the details of the laptop, he made it seem like it might not even be an M1530 at all.

You'll need to go about the cloning yourself, Dell does not make that their responsibility. You can easily clone a drive with Acronis TrueImage Home by hooking both drives to a desktop and cloning from the old to the new.

I suppose they might offer you a Studio XPS 16.
If that's the case, a drive clone won't be a very good idea anyway.

Glad you were finally able to get a response from the higher ups at Dell..I hope that the replacement you get is a very nice config' I would imagine that you would get a pretty nice comparable one :D

Hmmmm, so your saying that I can't just take my current 2.5" 250 gig HDD with all of my data on it and just slip it into the new computer?

A Studio XPS 16 would be amazing.......that really WOULD be like getting a new computer.

Also, thanks Cin for the well wishes!

You can just move the hard drive as long as it is mostly the same computer (same hardware that requires the same drivers). Do NOT just transfer your drive if you end up getting a Studio XPS as it will either not boot or you will have a huge amount of problems.

Exactly! You should have all your documents in one place, and all your other files in one folder on the computer. This way you can easily transfer everything to a usb key once a month and never fear of losing your files in case the computer crashes.

Always do a fresh install when the computer arrives. What I do is keep the operating system that Dell ships with the system for about 3-4 weeks so you can figure out all the kinks, the re-install windows and really appreciate how fast your system is.
