Regarding the XPS_1530.
Is it possible have a cable running from the xps's HDMI port going into a DVI inport on an external monitor (using an HDMI to DVI adapter) & use that external monitor as an extended desktop. ie. XPS's monitor plus an external monitor (not a duplicate of the laptops screen but an extension).
Thanks.

no im sorry, thats not possible. perhaps with a seperate third party piece of hardware, but i wouldnt even know where to start.
one think you could do (depending on what graphics card you have) is have 2 external monitors ditto your lappy monior. everything would be stretched out though. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
You can do it.
You should be able to do it straight from the Display Properties > Settings tab; I don't have an external monitor with me right now so I can't give you the exact location, but I've done it several times that way.
If you have an nVidia GPU, you can also configure multiple monitors under Display > Set up Multiple Displays; that should also give you the option to duplicate the desktop or use an extended desktop.
I'm sure there's a control-panel-ish way to do it with the X3100, but I've never used an X3100 machine, so I'm unsure of where that option'd be: probably under the Control Panel under it's own special section. -
It is completely possible.
I am currently using a Phillips HDMI-DVI cable to connect my m1530 to a Samsung 205BW. Works like a charm. you can have extended desktop, identical desktop, or close the notebook and run the external as your primary display, all you gotta do is hit Fn-F8 -
did you need special software to do this
-
nope, not at all. the nvidia drivers have built in options for extended desktop, and vista takes care of the rest.
the first time you connect the monitor it will prompt you to tell it how you want the monitor to be used (extended vs. duplicate) and will default to that everytime you plug the monitor in -

I now have an XPS 1530 & am very pleased with it I was concerned also about reported grainy screen & noisy Hard drives but so far fingers crossed all is fine. The extended desktop also works as you said, no problems. This was a concern as everyone I asked seemed to have a different opinion but yours was the most reliable as you're not trying to sell me one & you have the actual model, Thanks. -
