Anyone have an idea of what a normal price for the warranty extension should be? I called and was qouted $378 for one year, and $798 for four more years on my SXPS 16, and $179 for one more year on my E1705.

That is astronomically outrageous, even for Dell..

Those prices might be right for the top of the line one where they come to your home within one business day.

Perhaps that's because they know for a fact that the warranty will be used for existing SXPS 16's that have already been sold. I'm assuming they are building into the price the fact they know there is a high likelyhood they will be replacing the laptop during the warranty period. Thus the super-inflated price. For that kind of money, you may as well just put the money away and replace it yourself in 18-24 months.

    Depends on which ones you get;

Some include Complete Care(accidental damage) and all that and next business day support or in home service. Most basic is mail in service that covers functional failures.

Pretty normal to pay a larger amount for top of the line machines with premium next-business day support. I'm glad I have mine :)

I know that I've never paid more than $300 for 3 yr Complete Care when I've ordered my laptops in the past, including my wifes 1640. However I have no idea what they charge for that warranty as an add-on after purchase. You'd have to be insane to pay $900 though.

And yes, as the poster above mentions...next-day support rocks. I basically look at my EPP discount as a free 3yr CompleteCare warranty. I don't bother buying it for my desktop's as I've never had problems, but for a laptop it's a no brainer to me. There's way to much that can go wrong (ie. accidents) and it's impossible to fix some components cheap on a laptop (ie. GPU, MB, broken screen) that would be a quick cheap fix on a desktop.

I figure on my laptops I have a 50% chance of using the warranty within 3 yrs, and the repair is likely to be >$300 I paid for the warranty. Given that the warranty also includes system replacement if a fix is not possible, how can you go wrong?

I recently purchased an the 15 (L501x) on ebay with i5 560, 1080p, backlit kb, etc. I talked to dell for a couple of days about the warranty which is currently a 1 year mail in. I want 3 year on-site. I managed to get a quote of $271 inc tax for that modification. That was with a 30% discount though technical support (not through warranty services). When they tried to submit the order their system would not let them because the machine was still within the 30 day return period. They then tried to quote me a newly spec'ed machine price with that 3 year option selected but could not give me the 1080p screen because it had also been removed from their system and was still more expensive.

As it currently stands I have to wait till the 30 days are up and call back. My account has been noted with the approval for the 30% discount but the warranty prices change daily so what price I get when I call back next month who knows.

Also, I inquired about CompleteCare and they wanted an extra 3-500 for it for 3 years on top of the warranty. I could have extended the mail in and got CompleteCare for like 560... Not worth more then half the price of the machine.

I've considered squaretrade which will warranty the machine with ADP for 3 years for $179 (under $1000) but I would rather have the real 3 year warranty on-site.

Weird, if you configure a new XPS 15 with i5 560 and basic config the 3yr CompleteCare comes out to $360 CA on the Dell.ca website. Seems like they are definitely charging a LOT more if you purchase the warranty anytime after the initial order.

Can you show me how to get this 30% discount? I talked on the phone for hours but the best thing they gave me was 50-70 bucks off...Also, can someone do a review on squaretrade's warranty? I think I have to go with alternative warranty provider since I am not willing to pay 900 bucks for 3 additional years obviously.

According to Consumer Reports, the average cost of a computer repair equals the cost of the extended warranty.

I have purchased numerous computers and usually keep them four or five years with multiple computers in the household. I have never had a computer fail during the extended warranty period. If it is going to fail, it usually occurs during the warranty period.

Twenty two years ago I worked at a major accounting firm to help a prominent Japanese company implement extended warranties. The profit margin was 50%. Extended warranties are the most profitable part of the sale. Thanks to those who do buy the extended warranties as you are helping subsidize my computer purchases.

That's for 3rd part warranty companies and are much different than manufacturer warranties. The profit margins are between 40-70%.

My last SXPS extended warranty ended up covering 2 M/B replacements and a new XPS 15....what do you figure that' s worth total? A single M/B swap is ~$500-600, the new laptop was $1100. Is that worth the $300 I paid for it? Damn straight. Not to mention I still have 15 months left on the new laptop from the original warranty and I am fully covered for any accidental damage.

Ever drop a laptop or had a spill on one? If you live in a household with small children and multiple PC's the CompleteCar warranty is like gold, especially with the next day in-home service. I've had to deal with return to depot service in the past and it sucks compared to next-day.

Without my EPP discount I'd likely think a bit longer about the CompleteCare warranty, but since it's essentially like getting it for free I can't imagine not getting it to save a few bucks.

Well that's the difference between an extension of a manufacturer warranty vs an extended warranty from a 3rd party.

I recently extended my warranty to 3 years next business day for £180.
I was quite amazed as the warranty I had original was the base one, 10 working days pick-up and return.
